The Scalphunters (DVD)
Sydney Pollack directs this comic Western in which fur trapper Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster), following a successful expedition, is ambushed by a small group of Indians. The Indians force Joe to trade his pelts for an educated, runaway slave, played brilliantly by Ossie Davis. Things get flipped again when the Indians themselves are ambushed by a gang of scalphunters. This band of outlaws, led by Jim Howie, once again take Bass's pelts, after murdering the tribe.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Mono - English Mono - Spanish Subtitles - English - Optional Subtitles - French - Optional Subtitles - Spanish - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Hour of the Gun (DVD)
John Sturges revisits a subject that he had explored a decade earlier with GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, and this more melancholy version reflects the troubled period in which it was made. Set in 1888 in the aftermath of the historic gunfight, it stars James Garner as legendary sheriff Wyatt Earp. The surviving Clanton, Ike, has Wyatt and his brothers, Virgil (Frank Converse) and Morgan (Sam Melville), and their alcoholic, gunslinger friend, Doc Holiday (Jason Robards Jr.) arrested for murder. The charges are quickly dismissed, and Virgil accepts an offer to run for marshal of Tombstone. But he's trapped by some of Clanton's men and is so seriously injured that he has to step down. After Morgan offers to take his brother's place on the ballot, he's killed. Wyatt is appointed as federal marshal, and he and Doc round up a posse to go after Ike Clanton. Wyatt now displays a grim ruthlessness that disturbs even his hard-bitten friend, while Doc suddenly begins
hemorrhaging and realizes that he has to go to a sanatorium or die. This inspired look at Western vengeance features a terrific cast, including Garner, Robards, Robert Ryan, Albert Salmi, and a young Jon Voight, in his film debut.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Mono - English Subtitles - English - Optional Subtitles - French - Optional Subtitles - Spanish - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. With his prominent moustache and outlaw posturing, Burt Reynolds personified the 1970s-era hunk. In SAM WHISKEY, he exudes cowboy confidence as the title character. Asked by a strange woman for a bizarre favor, he soon finds himself attempting to find stolen gold at the bottom of a river and return it to the bank from which it was robbed. The lovely Angie Dickinson and noted character actor Ossie Davis add flavor to this vintage action flick.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Letterboxed - 1.85Audio: Mono - English Mono - Spanish Subtitles - English - Optional Subtitles - French - Optional Subtitles - Spanish - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. When four men who Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) believes raped and killed his wife escape from their death sentences, Jim sets out to track the men down and enact his own vengeance. An honest man, Jim sees his actions as just and brave, but as he crisscrosses Mexico to exact an eye for an eye, he comes to realize that he has lost something of himself in his self-absorbed quest for revenge. Peck did his best work in characters with strong arcs, and THE BRAVADOS is no exception. Carrying the film from scene to scene, Peck hits his mark dead on when he realizes that the men he is after may actually be innocent, providing an exceptional cinematic moment. Joan Collins does a fine job as Josefa Velarde, an old flame of Jim's, but PeckAes real costar is the gorgeous color photography of the mountains and ravines of the Mexican countryside.

Veronica Lake stars in this western from 1951, which is set amid the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution. Lake plays Mary Stevens, who has travelled to Mexico with her daughter following the death of her father and ruination of her Southern plantation in the U.S. But once there Stevens finds herself in further danger, as she is kidnapped and held hostage by a key figure in the Mexican Revolution who senses that her capture may bring him the riches he needs to help fund his efforts in overthrowing the Emperor of the country. Fascinatingly, STRONGHOLD was filmed concurrently with a Mexican film named FURIA ROJO. Both films shared the same plot, but a different cast rendered each film, with Mexican starlet Sarita Montiel taking Lake`s role in FURIA ROJO.

How the West Was Won (DVD)
Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--The Civil War (directed by John Ford), The Railroad (directed by George Marshall), and The River, the Plains, the Outlaws (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep CaseSpecial Features: Behind the scenes featurette, Theatrical trailer, 8-Page Booklet.

Stagecoach (DVD)
Regarded by many as the best Western ever made, STAGECOACH shot John Wayne to stardom and elevated the prestige of a genre that had hitherto been considered a B-movie province. With rumors in the air of a possible Apache attack, a motley group of travelers in a small New Mexico town board the Overland Stage bound for Lordsburg. Among them are the pregnant Lucy Mallory (Louise Platt); timid liquor salesman Peacock (Donald Meek); Hatfield, an aloof gambler (John Carradine); Gatewood (Berton Churchill), a pompous, embezzling banker; and two who have been exiled from town, alcoholic Doc Boone (Thomas Mitchell) and Dallas (Clair Trevor), a lady of the evening. Along the trail, they pick up the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), an outlaw who's escaped from prison to take revenge on the Plummer brothers for destroying his family and framing him for murder. As their journey progresses, the hypocrisy of the supposedly respectable passengers becomes clear, and it's the tainted outsiders who display courage and humanity. Described by Orson Welles, who watched the film innumerable times before making CITIZEN KANE, as his cinematic textbook, STAGECOACH is superbly made in every respect, layering humor and sharp characterization into an exciting plot that includes a spectacularly photographed chase in Monument Valley.DVD Features:Region 1Snap CasePan& Scan - 1.33Additional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
