Broken Lance (DVD) Broken Lance (DVD) $9.87 » Broken Lance (DVD)

Edward Dmytryk directed this literate Western, a remake of THE HOUSE OF STRANGERS, which is itself loosely based on Shakespeare's KING LEAR. Tyrannical cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Spencer Tracy) has raised his older sons harshly, leaving them neglected and bitter, particularly Ben (Richard Widmark). Matt's youngest son, Joe (Robert Wagner), however, receives the most attention from Matt's wife, a Comanche indian (Katy Jurado). Joe remains loyal, even taking the rap when the old man gets hauled up on charges of launching a raid on a nearby copper mine. After spending three years in jail, Joe comes home to find his dad dead from a stroke, his mother back with her tribe, and his brothers running the ranch into the ground. Joe, understandably shocked and enraged, then plots his revenge. The film features a solid script by Richard Murphy and strong supporting performances by Hugh O'Brien, Eduard Franz, Earl Holliman and E.G. Marshall. It's interesting to see Spencer Tracy in such an unsympathetic light as the patriarch; his scenes with Jurado comprise some of the film's best moments.

The outlaw-besieged mining town of Warlock hires a professional vigilante gunslinger named Clay (Henry Fonda) and his club-footed sidekick (Anthony Quinn) to clean up the streets and restore law and order. They tidy things up all right, but their brutal methods call the whole concept of law and order into question. Eventually a reformed outlaw in town named Johnny (Richard Widmark) is elected sheriff, and a showdown with Clay seems inevitable, especially after a beautiful woman (Dolores Michaels) arrives in town accusing Clay of murdering her fiance. This character-driven, thinking man's Western benefits from a cast of familiar supporting actors: Wallace Ford, Richard Arlen, Whit Bissell, DeForest Kelley (Bones from STAR TREK) and Frank Gorshin (The Riddler from TV's BATMAN). Director Edward Dmytryk successfully incorporates lofty issues of morality and masculinity into the traditional western trappings, and the result is a classic of the genre, both thoughtful and two-fisted.DVD Features:Widescreen

In Old Arizona (DVD) In Old Arizona (DVD) $9.87 » In Old Arizona (DVD)

The original Cisco Kid western that set off a run of knockoffs in the early days of cinema, IN OLD ARIZONA is historically notable for a number of reasons. An early talkie filmed in 1929, it was the first western with sound to emerge from a major studio, Fox Pictures, making it a revolutionary breakthrough with its cleverly-hidden microphones masked by real rocks and shrubs. Warner Baxter received an Academy Award for his portrayal of the Cisco Kid, the Robin Hood of the West who was based on the character conceived by O. Henry. Originally cast in the role, director Raoul Walsh (WHITE HEAT) had to drop out of the project after a car accident involving a jackrabbit left him with his signature eye patch, which he wore for the rest of his life. The Cisco Kid and his rival, Sgt. Mickey Dunne (Edmund Lowe), are both in love with the fetching Tonia Maria (Dorothy Burgess LADY FOR A NIGHT), whose beauty is equal only to her trickery. She soon betrays the Kid to the Sergeant, and Cisco turns ruthless in his quest for revenge, plotting to ensnare Tonia in a trap that was meant for him.

Barbara Stanwyck (STELLA DALLAS) stars as Jessica Drummond, a rancher who runs her Arizona cattle ranch with an iron hand and a private army of 40 hired guns. The tough-as-nails matriarch has a troublesome brother whom she nonetheless dotes on, and when he shoots the sheriff she comes to his aid, unable to say no. This instigates an all-out war, which is further complicated by the fact that the new Marshall, Griff Bonnell (Barry Sullivan) falls hard for Jessica, and she returns his feelings. A gem from auteur Samuel Fuller (THE BIG RED ONE) that reads as a noir dressed as a western, the film ingeniously invokes genre tropes to investigate the intricacies of sex and love; its conclusions are less than optimistic, but the film retains a fascinating, almost surreal allure.

Buffalo Bill (DVD) Buffalo Bill (DVD) $9.87 » Buffalo Bill (DVD)

William Wellman skillfully directs the life story of William F. Cody, who's better known as Buffalo Bill. Based on a story by Frank Winch, there is plenty of action as the stages of his life unfold. The journey begins with his early years as an Indian fighter, jumps to his days as a scout and campaigner for Indian rights, and culminates in a display of his later years of Wild West showmanship. The full-on conflict between the U.S. Cavalry and the Cheyenne tribe at War Bonnet Gorge, in which Cody finds himself going head to head with his former Indian friend, is one of the most riveting sequences in the film. Joel McCrea is completely convincing in the title role, and Maureen O' Hara is both earnest and sensual as the senator's daughter who becomes his wife. The film is escapist in the best sense, revealing a number of colorful exterior panoramas. The rest of the solid cast, which includes Linda Darnell as a schoolteacher who loves Cody, keeps this light fare worthwhile.

Heller in Pink Tights (DVD) Heller in Pink Tights (DVD) $9.87 » Heller in Pink Tights (DVD)

The only Western director George Cukor ever made, HELLER IN PINK TIGHTS is a comedy about show business with satirical commentary on the Western genre. The film, based on a novel by Louis L'Amour and full of witty exchanges and a striking visual style, concerns a vaudeville troupe that stays one step ahead of the bill collector as it tours the frontier circa 1880. The central premise finds ringleaders Angela Rossini (Sophia Loren) and Tom Healy (Anthony Quinn) needing a more flamboyant act than normal
in order to entertain the citizens of the wild West. The film and the novel are based upon the unconventional theatrical career of Adah Isaacs Menken, whose perennial equestrian role became legendary in the 19th century. HELLER IN PINK TIGHTS was Walter Bernstein's first script since he was blacklisted in the 1950s, and his efforts, together with a fine score and impressive cinematography, helped Cukor capture a legendary era.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 16.9Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - English

Last Train from Gun Hill (DVD) Last Train from Gun Hill (DVD) $9.87 » Last Train from Gun Hill (DVD)

Kirk Douglas stars as U.S. Marshal Matt Morgan. When Morgan's wife is raped and murdered because she's a half-breed, the killers leave behind a saddle that he recognizes as the property of his friend Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn), a wealthy cattle rancher in the nearby town of Gun Hill. Realizing that Belden's son Rick (Earl Holliman) is one of the killers, Morgan travels to Gun Hill to arrest him. Although sympathetic about the death of Morgan's wife, Belden predictably refuses to turn over his son when the marshal makes known the purpose of his visit, claiming that Morgan owes him for having once saved his life. Not only must Morgan locate and arrest Rick, but he has to do so before the last train leaves Gun Hill at 9 p.m. Although the whole town, which is virtually owned by Belden, seems to be against him, the marshal receives some much-needed help from Linda (Carolyn Jones), the sharp local madam. The entire cast is excellent and John Sturges's direction is exemplary in this solid if unsurprising genre exercise.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseSingle Side - Single LayerWidesceen - 16.9Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - English

McLintock! (DVD) McLintock! (DVD) $9.87 » McLintock! (DVD)

Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O`Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O`Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on THE QUIET MAN. As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock`s chauvinistic attempts to
tame
his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. The ultimate example of this comes at the end of the film when McLintock settles his marital dispute by publicly
spanking
his wife in what is now a notorious cinematic moment.
