Clint Eastwood stars as the title character in this low-key, moderately politicized variation of his spaghetti Westerns. In New Mexico in the late 1890s, the fiery Louis Chama (John Saxon) leads a group of Mexican-American peasants in a fight for their land after the evidence of their ownership has been destroyed in a questionable courthouse fire. The wealthy Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall), who also lays claim to the disputed land, has decided to bypass the legal system and hires a group of killers to take care of Chama. Kidd, who initially rejects Harlan's offer to join his hunting party, changes his mind when he finds that Chama has stolen some of his horses and brutalized one of his ranch hands. However, after seeing Harlan randomly pick off some Mexicans and becoming interested in Helen Sanchez (Stella Garcia), Kidd begins to think twice about his current employer. After he frees a group of hostages who are about to be mowed down by Harlan and his men, he takes off into the hills with Chama. Given the participants, JOE KIDD should have been much better, as it is somewhat hamstrung by an Elmore Leonard script that seems bored with its characters. Renowned and prolific Mexican director Raul de Anda directs his son Rodolfo in the remake of his classic melodrama SUCEDIO EN JALISCO. A young doctor returns after many years to his home town during the height of the Mexican Civil War, hoping to help the people of the village he left behind. While he was away, the local ranch passed into the hands of the rancher's lovely daughter, now more beautiful than the doctor remembered. He begins a romance with her, causing her powerful ranch hand to become insanely jealous. That envy sweeps the characters up into a love triangle that threatens to be broken by the very forces of history.

A group of dancehall beauties have hatched a plot to rob a bank in this classic old west tale; they seduce the bank owner in order to milk him for information about a gold shipment. Unfortunately, the conversation is witnessed by a group of gunslingers with plans of their own, and they undertake to steal the gold for themselves. A girl kneels over the grave of her murdered dog, praying for a miracle, while off in the distance, a man rides toward town on a pale horse. Clint Eastwood's PALE RIDER was the filmmaker's first Western in nearly a decade. It finds a pleasant balance between the mystical revisionism of films such as HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and the traditional Western. Eastwood stars as the Preacher, who wanders into a dusty California town and tries to rescue a community of gold prospectors that is being terrorized by the local corporate mining operation, which is strip-mining the land. He's taken in by Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty), who lives with Sarah Wheeler (Carrie Snodgrass) and her 14-year-old daughter, she of the murdered pooch, Megan (Sydney Penny). The Preacher is something of a blend of Eastwood's Man with No Name and the title character of George Stevens's SHANE. The story and treatment are straightforward and entertaining, and the strong performances draw the audience in. Using a post-Alamo setting, this adaptation surprisingly retains the complexity of Shakespeare's characters.
