Tenamonya Voyagers (DVD)
When an off-planet school closes down, it leaves one teacher and one student, Ayako and Wakana, respectively, in need of a way to get back home to Earth. The pair are excited when they cross paths with Paraila, a girl who is on her way to Earth as well, and with whom they can make the journey. Unfortunately, Paraila turns out to be the boss of an international crime syndicate who has both the police and the syndicate chasing after her. Martine Franck: One Day to the Next includes more than one hundred images unexpected not only for the singular moments they capture, but for their formal rigor, their wit, and their sensitivity. Included here is a selection of the highly regarded photographer`s favorite images, grouped thematically to cover subject matter ranging from childhood to old age, from landscapes to crowds. In creating her pictures, which range from revealing portraits of such artists and writers as Michel Foucault and Marc Chagall to engaging studies of children playing at the seaside and a photographic record of the acclaimed Theatre du Soleil, she sees photography as
a frontier, a barrier of sorts that one is constantly breaking down so as to get closer to the subject.
Two current projects - one of images made on Tory Island, County Donegal, Ireland, and the other of Tibetan Buddhist refugees in India and Nepal - are represented alongside photographs from the last thirty of Franck`s remarkably creative years.
