Buy Tan Dun: The Map (DVD)

Composer Tan Dun's THE MAP is an ambitious project which draws on his discovery of music from the far-flung corners of the globe. The majority of his discoveries were unearthed in China's Western Hunan region, where the talented musician captured a number of field recordings on camera. Using these recordings as a basis for a concerto, Tan Dun subsequently split the music he heard into 10 movements, named them THE MAP, and reconfigured them with the help of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Performances at the Boston Symphony Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall followed in early 2003. Then, in late 2003, Dun took the project to its logical conclusion by bringing it to the Northern Gate of Fenghuang Ancient Town for a performance aided by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. This release features the concert in its entirety, as well as a fascinating documentary which charters the origins of the piece.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Material: DocumentaryText/Photo Gallery: Photo GalleryDVD-ROM Features: Weblinks

Deviating heavily from the original film from which it derives its name, this 1961 psychological thriller, written by respected horror writer Robert Bloch (PSYCHO), retains only the themes of somnambulism from its predecessor. Glynis Johns stars as Jane, a young woman who has lost her way and winds up spending the night at the creepy estate owned by Dr. Caligari (Dan O`Herlihy). Upon her attempt to leave in the morning, Jane learns that she has been drugged, and is now Caligari`s captive. Caligari turns out to be a pervert, spying on her in the bathtub and attempting to pry into her sexual history, and the house is occupied by strange and helpless people. Jane`s only friend is a handsome young man who shows her a way to escape. When she puts his plan into practice, however, Jane learns that nothing there is what it seems, and that her true captor is her own mind.

Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti), the power-hungry owner of a railroad company, hires Frank (Henry Fonda, playing against type), a gunfighter without a conscience, to kill anyone who stands in the way of the completion of the railroad. After Frank murders land owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), McBain's widow (Claudia Cardinale) hires two killers of her own to protect her and gain revenge: a mysterious, harmonica-playing desperado (Charles Bronson) and his rogue sidekick (Jason Robards). Using techniques previously unseen in the genre, Sergio Leone utilizes close-ups, color, and Ennio Morricone's trademark score to create a tense and somber meditation on death which is widely considered to be one of the best westerns in cinematic history. Soon-to-be legendary Italian directors Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA) and Bernardo Bertolucci (THE LAST EMPEROR) collaborated with Leone on the screenplay.DVD Features:Region 1Keep Case2-Disc SetAnamorphic WidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Surround - English Dolby Mono - English Dolby Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
