An adaptation of the legendary biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars Richard Gere as King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a shepherd boy, David is anointed as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel (Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the weakness of Saul (Edward Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the Philistines to an end by defeating their champion Goliath (George Eastman) in battle, he is celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by Saul, whose jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in battle, David assumes the throne--but not without a sense that it is covered in blood. As time passes, he finds himself in vicious battles with neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the Israelites. Despite David's many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting influence on the patriarch, and ultimately, even he is no longer favored by his God. The sequel to 1972's FRITZ THE CAT, NINE LIVES catches up with Fritz post-college and married. Director Ralph Bakshi continues to use the animated cat as a vehicle for satire and out and out comedy.Fritz is unhappily married and smokes marijuana to escape into his imagination about what his other eight lives may have been like. Since FRITZ THE CAT, Fritz has degenerated to the point where his main concerns are collecting a welfare check and constructing overblown sexual scenarios in his head. In this spoof of STAR WARS and a handful of other sci-fi flicks from the 1970s and'80s, space-bum-for-hire Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-dog/half-man sidekick, Barf (John Candy), must rescue a spoiled Druish princess (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) in time to pay off Pizza the Hut. With SPACEBALLS, director Mel Brooks is at it again, this time with a science-fiction parody with all the blue-screen special effects and weird makeup (though in this film, things are always slightly off-kilter and unpolished). Here, maverick space travelers set out to save the planet Druidia, which is being harassed by the Spaceballs, a sinister group attempting to pilfer Druidia's air resources. Among the many gags and jokes is a hilarious parody of a classic scene from ALIEN.
