The NOVA team revisits the site of the miraculous World War II escape mission dramatized by film THE GREAT ESCAPE (starring Steve McQueen). This program follows archeologists on a search for a tunnel that was never discovered by German forces. Referred to as Dick, this tunnel was one of three dug by 600 prisoners of a Nazi POW camp, and used by 76 escapees on March 24, 1944. Sixty years later, this excavation reveals the amazing labor and intellect that went into building Dick. Like the other two, this tunnel was equipped with electric lighting, railways, and even underground air pumps. Several veterans of the Great Escape visit the excavation, recalling the struggles they had to overcome as prisoners in the pursuit of freedom. While only three men fully escaped from the mission, the tunnels themselves are a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseSingle Side - Single LayerLetterboxed - 1.85Audio: Dolby Stereo - English
