First Spaceship on Venus (DVD)
Eight curious scientists in the far-future year 1985 try to find the source and meaning of a message disc from the planet Venus. Based on The Astronauts by the great Stanislaw Lem (SOLARIS), this SF curio also boasts a multinational cast, as well as beautiful photography and production design. Though Lem disowned the film, it stands on its own rather well and is probably one of the best SF films from the fifties. Unfortunately, every video version of the film to date is of the 80 minute US version. The original European cut of the film ran about 130 minutes.DVD Features:Region 0Snap CaseWidescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Rocketship X-M (DVD)
Lloyd Bridges stars as spaceship pilot Colonel Graham in this 1950 sci-fi film about a group of four astronauts (three men, one woman) whose trip to the moon is ruined when a solar wind blows them off course, forcing them to land on Mars. There, they find a primitive society of beings that bear a striking resemblance to humans. One of the better sci-fi films to come out of the 1950s, ROCKETSHIP X-M is a serious thriller that boasts excellent black and white photography (the Mars scenes have an eerie red tint), fine acting, and mixes an intriguing plot and sophisticated science with some rather bizarre fifties naivete, making for a thoroughly entertaining trip into space.DVD FeaturesRegion Encoding: All RegionsSnap CaseTrailer
