Melies the Magician (DVD)
Georges Melies' innovations led to some of the earliest examples of fantasy filmmaking in the history of cinema. His creative time lapses, early experiments and use of the cinematic technique gave birth to ways of storytelling still commonly used today. This collection of shorts and experiments ranges from avant-garde to science fiction to documentary and greatly influenced the art of cinema both as a narrative form and a dreamy forum for magical imagery. Included in this collection are the following short films:
The Four Troublesome Heads (1898), Fat and Lean Wrestling Match (1900),The One-Man Band (1900), The Man with the Rubber Head (1901), Bluebeard (1901), A Trip to the Moon (1902), The Infernal Boiling Pot (1903), The Infernal Cakewalk (1903), The Music Lover (1903), The Living Playing Cards (1904), Hilarious Posters (1904), Imperceptible Transmutations (1904), Untameable Whiskers (1904), The Scheming Gambler's Paradise (1905), and The Devilish Tenant (1909). Also included are several early experimental tests that Melies attempted and a documentary explaining the man and his vision, The Magic of Melies (1997) by Jacques Meny.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual LayerAdditional Release Material: Bonus Features - 1. Sin City - Recut And Extended (DVD)
Adapted from Frank Miller`s graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez`s striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller`s co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly lovestruck Marv, a trenchcoat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a
bum ticker
whose goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and a slew of lethally dangerous vixens lead by Gail (Rosario Dawson). With blood spurting white, yellow, and yes even red; a roster of hot actors that goes on and on; and sound editing that makes you feel like you`re the one being punched in the face, SIN CITY is a gift for fans of Miller`s art, loaded with style and grit.

I, Robot/Independence Day (DVD)
I, ROBOT: Loosely based on the novel from Isaac Asimov, I, ROBOT is an action-packed, CGI-laden thrill ride from director Alex Proyas (THE CROW). Set in 2035, the film stars Will Smith as Chicago law enforcer Detective Del Spooner. Called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), Spooner deduces that Lanning didn`t kill himself but was, in fact, murdered. Lanning worked for the U.S. Robotics headquarters, where he constructed friendly robots designed to help humans with mundane tasks. Lanning`s creations are in use all over the city and have been fully integrated into the culture. They are allegedly programmed not to harm humans, but as Spooner digs deeper, his investigations lead him to a new type of robot that Lanning was working on before his death, and one of these models--the highly charismatic Sonny--becomes the prime suspect in the case. Spooner bears a grudge against robots after an unfortunate incident, so his case against Sonny is met with shrugs of indifference from colleagues who know his prejudices all too well. Fortunately, he meets an ally--and a romantic interest--in Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who agrees to help him. As Sonny is cured of his violent tendencies, the other robots amass across the city, working on the assumption that they need to control humanity in order to safeguard its future. As Spooner and Calvin chase the errant robots all over the city, director Proyas unleashes a fearsome arsenal of special effects. Sonny`s facial features and voice are digitally manipulated from those of the actor Alan Tudyk, lending an unnerving element of humanity to the character. Smith and Moynahan give convincing performances throughout, and as the action races towards a nail-biting conclusion, the message of the movie suggests that technologies built to help mankind could also provide its downfall.INDEPENDENCE DAY: With a $71 million budget and mind-blowing special effects, INDEP
