Reuniting director Barry Sonnenfeld with most of the original hit film's cast, MEN IN BLACK II picks up with alien-monitoring secret agent Jay (Will Smith) in a rut. Weary of the isolated life of an MiB operative, Jay continually fires new partners until MiB director Zed (Rip Torn) teams him up with the talkative pug, Frank (voiced by Tim Blaney). Together they investigate an alien-on-alien murder witnessed by the lovely Rita (Rosario Dawson), who Jay immediately falls for. The case eventually leads Jay and Frank to track down agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), who now works at a rural post office, completely unaware of his former life. Unfortunately, it's what Kay can't remember that may save the world from destruction at the hands of the shape-shifting alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle). As Jay attempts to jog the memory of the reluctant Kay, Serleena takes over MiB headquarters, building up to a big New York City showdown.A fast-paced follow-up to the 1997 sci-fi comedy, MEN IN BLACK II sticks to its guns, offering up more action, aliens, and intergalactic weirdness. This time around Smith and characters such as Frank and the wisecracking worms are the focus, although Jones makes the most out of his screen time with his deadpan persona thoroughly intact. And, as with the first movie, MIB II features plenty of enjoyable scenes, including an underground romp involving a subway-sized alien and Frank the Dog's head-out-of-the-car-window rendition of I Will Survive.

In UNDERWORLD, a dark and Gothic monster action movie, vampires and lycans--an ancient form of werewolf--are at war. While the vampires inhabit a gigantic castle that houses their ancestor`s tombs, the lycans live underground in a dilapidated sewer cave. Both teams are equipped with big guns, and they are constantly innovating deadlier bullets to gain advantage over each other. On the vampire side, the leather-clad death agent Selene (Kate Beckinsale) delegates teams of vamps to attack the lycans. But when she discovers that the lycans have kidnapped a human medical student, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), she knows the worst is on its way. Against the orders of her superior, Kraven (Shane Brolly), who is obsessively in love with Selene, she awakens the most powerful vampire of all time, Viktor (Bill Nighy) and prepares for a massive feud against lycan leader Lucian (Michael Sheen).Director Len Wiseman offers a tough, fast, and gory addition to the horror-fantasy genre with UNDERWORLD. Impressive special effects show the lycans transforming from humans to werewolves, and the lycans` ability to squeeze silver bullets out of their skin is also rudely fascinating. Beckinsale is captivating in the role of the lead vamp, with her leather corset, pouty expressions, and double-fisted pistols perfectly communicating the glam-action mood of the film.

THE MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD: The American release title of the elaborate and immensely popular Russian fantasy SADKO, this version was recut and remastered by Francis Ford Coppola. Sadko is a young Gusli player who, after boasting at a feast that he can bring home to Novgorod the Bird of Happiness, or the mythical Phoenix, sets out to do just that despite his fellow merrymakers` disbelief. Aided in his quest by the daughter of the Ocean King, who is in love with his voice, he travels to many faraway lands including Egypt and India, but in the end he learns that he never really needed to stray from home to find happiness. Sadko`s value to society as an artist, his closeness with nature, kindness to the poor, and his loyalty to love and country, all reflect the idealized cultural values of the time, and the beautiful, extravagant mise-en-scene is breathtakingly gorgeous.THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE: An imported Russian-Finnish production that is a spectacular journey through a strange world, this bizarre, surreal fantasy was based on a Finnish fairy tale. It follows Lemminkainen, a blacksmith whose sister has been kidnapped by an evil witch; she wants to force our hero into making her a Sampo, a magic mill that produces gold, flour, and salt, and assures its owner wealth. The witch also steals the sun and freezes the world until her dark wishes are fulfilled.

BATTLE BEYOND THE SUN: Francis Ford Coppola redirected a Russian sci-fi flick called NEBO ZOVYOT in this, his directorial debut. Interesting sets and costumes characterize a low-budget tale about a Russian/ American race to put a man on Mars; as each side struggles to build a spaceship capable of such a mission, it becomes clear that Mars is home to a horror that mankind cannot comprehend. Produced by B-movie auteur Roger Corman, Coppola originally released this film under the pseudonym Thomas Colchart.STAR PILOT: Alternately known as 2 + 5: MISSIONE HYDRA, this low-budget classic of Italian horror follows a professor living on the island of Sardinia with his daughter, along with several assistants and a couple of Asian spies. When a spaceship carrying aliens from the planet Hydra crash-lands nearby, the group become unlikely heroes as they endeavor to counter an invasion by helping the aliens repair their spaceship. Muscle, action, and a healthy dose of camp went into both of these B-movie gems. Hercules (bodybuilder Reg Park) must save his son's soul from the evil Earth Goddess Gia in THE AVENGER. When he travels to the underworld, Gia's equally evil, psychopathic son Antaius assumes his identity as king. Antaius proceeds to wreak havoc upon the populace, methodically destroy the country, until Hercules returns to avenge his people. Then, in HERCULES AND THE BLACK PIRATE, things take a decidedly surreal turn when Hercules (this time played by Alan Steele) engages in a little time travel.
