Hammerhead (DVD) Hammerhead (DVD) $17.56 » Hammerhead (DVD)

Director Michael Oblowitz`s HAMMERHEAD is a horror movie reminiscent of Renny Harlin`s DEEP BLUE SEA and Peter Benchley`s THE BEAST. Here, a scientist creates a monster after undertaking some stem cell research. Believing that fusing the bodies of a human being and a hammerhead shark will aid his studies, the megalomaniac doctor instead creates a killing machine that possesses the vicious nature of a shark and the intelligence of a human being. The doctor sets one of his creations loose, aiming to kill the scientists who are trying to stop his dastardly experiments. Bloody mayhem breaks out and a sizeable body count builds up as the film nears its climax. Horror fans will be delighted to find genre favorite Jeffrey Combs (RE-ANIMATOR) fitting into a familiar role as the insane doctor who invents the shark/human hybrid.

KONG ISLAND: A man must journey deep into the jungle to trap down an insane former friend who has set up a compound where he imprisons women and performs experiments on gorillas, turning them into his slaves. This mind-boggling Spanish-Italian production combines a no-budget drive-in sensibility (plenty of violence and scantily clad women) with a late 1960's go-go vibe, earning it cult status.QUEEN KONG: This British send-up of KING KONG features a giant female gorilla running amuck in London. The gender tables are turned as the amorous simian falls for actor Ray Fay (Robin Askwith) and carts him off to Big Ben. Rula Lenska also stars.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.78

Batman Begins (WS/DVD) Batman Begins (WS/DVD) $17.19 » Batman Begins (WS/DVD)

Genius of mystery and intrigue Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO, FOLLOWING, INSOMNIA) helms this prequel to the Batman films based on the DC Comics series, explaining how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)--the billionaire prince of Gotham whose parents were killed in an alleyway mugging--transformed into the crime-fighting superhero. With flashbacks to his privileged childhood, young Master Wayne, as he is called by the butler Alfred (Michael Caine), develops a terrible fear of bats when he falls through the backyard garden into a hidden cave. As a young adult, Wayne lives among the League of Shadows, a martial arts group in the mountains of Asia. His leaders Ra`s al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) teach him strength, endurance, and--unfortunately--evil, against which he naturally rebels. Returning to Gotham and reinstating himself as a dapper socialite and the rightful heir to his parents` enterprise, Wayne quickly devises his secret identity, commanding help from the gadgetry expert Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman). With one eye on his childhood playmate Rachel (Katie Holmes)--now a beautiful woman and dedicated lawyer--and the other on his mission to save Gotham from criminal corruption, Batman makes his fledgling debut. But when the blue-blooded mastermind Dr. Crane (Cillian Murphy)--who steals every scene with chilling menace--taints the water system with a hallucinatory substance, Batman realizes he has met his first true opponent. An attitude of grave seriousness elevates BATMAN BEGINS above more cartoony Batman movies, as Nolan crafts a dark drama that thrives on sci-fi intrigue. Bale strides into the role with grace, adding refinement that is seldom seen in action-oriented films. And while the action scenes explode with high-tech glitz and fast-moving thrills, they are evenly placed among sequences of plot and character development, making for a complex and satisfying viewing experience.

Strange Frequency 2 (DVD) Strange Frequency 2 (DVD) $17.16 » Strange Frequency 2 (DVD)

Made up of four seemingly unrelated, but universally odd stories, STRANGE FREQUENCY 2 may remind some of THE TWILIGHT ZONE for its exploration of the unknown. Connected only by their bizarre events and the theme of rock& roll, the fantasies presented here explore issues like addiction, revenge, betrayal, and greed. In Don't Stop Believing, Ben Stanton's (Peter Strauss) political career is facing its end after the tragic death of his young lover goes public. Ravaged by this event, Ben is repeatedly transported back to the seconds before the fatal crash each time he hears his campaign song. Does this time travel suggest some hope for retrieving his lover, or will he be forced to relive this painful moment over and over again? In Instant Karma, a conceited rock star takes advantage of a young fan. Eager to pay him back, Lara (Lindsay Sloane) casts a spell on Vince (Jason Gedrick), and switches bodies with him. Inhabiting his skin, Lara is in the position to seek the ultimate revenge. Patsy Kensit stars a prodding rock journalist in Cold Turkey, asking a songwriter named Jared (John Hawkes) if he's ever written music while sober. Suffering from a creative dry spell, Jared jumps off the wagon on a path towards self-destruction. The journalist joins him, only to reveal she has come to haunt him by personifying his alcoholism in the shape of a woman. In Soul Man, Mitch's (James Marsters) trip to the thrift store proves especially rewarding when he finds the last song ever recorded by Jimi Hendrix. Driven by the pursuit of stardom, Mitch ignores warnings by the devil, and releases the song in order to become famous.DVD Features:Region 1Keep Case3-Disc SetFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access

Doom (DVD) Doom (DVD) $16.88 » Doom (DVD)

In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilization; scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn`t be, and trying find out what happened. Answer: nothing good. That`s what Sarge (The Rock) and his unit of high-tech Marines find out the hard way when they`re sent to investigate a disturbance on the base--which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters.DOOM, based on one of the most popular video games of all time, knows exactly what it wants to do, and wastes no time in doing it. Andrzej Bartkowiak, the director of lean, effective action flicks like ROMEO MUST DIE and EXIT WOUNDS, gets right to the meat of the movie: marines versus monsters in dark, dank corridors. The Rock brings just the right balance of bad-ass attitude and deadpan humor to the role of Sarge, while the cast`s other standout is Reaper (LORD OF THE RINGS` Karl Urban), who tries to repair his strained relationship with his sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike), one of the base`s scientists. They`re joined by a motley crew, including the twisted Portman, intensely religious Goat, affable Duke, and newbie The Kid. While the plot differs from that of the game in a few key ways, it remains true to the spirit of the original--a no-frills fest of shooting, explosions, gore, and vicious zombies. The game was, of course, a
first-person shooter,
and in an inspired moment, the movie turns itself into one for a stretch. It`s exhilarating, as are several surprising twists that separate this fun, streamlined action extravaganza from lesser video game adaptations.
