Dr. Cahill (Thomas Calabro) is a handsome young doctor who is developing a shaky hand. Unable to properly cut his patients open anymore, he is recommended to get away for a while. Dr. Cahill chooses Orrs Island off the coast of Maine where he expects to relax in a sleepy resort town. Upon encountering a frigid welcome from the locals, the doctor's trip then takes an even worse turn when flesh eating cockroaches from Africa invade the town. The bugs attack by finding human hosts upon which to breed and it is up to Dr. Cahill to regain his steady hand in saving this infestation from continuing. Gory special effects and expert bug wrangling highlight this thrilling bug attack picture. Four stories about robots make up Greg Pak's inventive, comedic science-fiction film. In My Robot Baby, a couple of aspiring parents go to an adoption agency, anticipating their first child. However, instead of the human baby they expected, they are given a robot baby as a parenting test. Equipped with computer sensors, the robot baby monitors its parents' caregiving, recording such crucial information as when it is fed and how often it is cuddled. However, when its father is called away on a business trip, mom is left with a significant burden--a very bad robot. Next, in The Robot Fixer, which is the most effective and moving story of the bunch, a mother and daughter tend to their son/brother, who has fallen into a coma after being hit by a car. Going to his apartment, they find a neglected collection of Microbots, and they decide to reassemble the bots piece by piece--finding arms, legs, and other accoutrements at garage sales and in toy stores. Machine Love is the most outrageous of the vignettes. It is the story of a G9 iPerson, the newest model of personal computer in the year 2007. The computer appears to be an actual person who looks like an office worker and is programmed not only to perform work, but to adapt to office culture. When the iPerson meets his love interest, his programming proves to be very multifunctional. In the final installment of ROBOT STORIES, entitled Clay, an old man living in 2027 prepares to die. Longing for the wife he lost long before, he debates whether to die a natural death or undergo scanning, a process by which his consciousness may live on after his body is gone. METROPOLIS, a visionary and elaborate spectacle by director Fritz Lang is an epic projection of a futuristic city divided into a working and an elite class. Fritz Lang (METROPOLIS, M. THE BIG HEAT) used a scenario by his then wife Thea von Harbou about a trip to the moon to continue his early investigations into science and technology. When scientist Manfeldt finally gets the chance to go to the moon and prove his theory of the existence of lunar gold deposits, he is disappointed to discover that he must travel with various strangers. They include Frieda and Hans--a newly wed couple, a scheming financier named Turner, Wolf Helius--the engineer in charge of the expedition, and Gustav--a young castaway. When the crew actually discovers gold in the lunar caverns, the greedy Turner faces off against the bewildered professor, and violence ensues.
Fritz Lang focused much of his attention on creating the rocket launch as well as the lunar landscapes in keeping with his many scientific advisors' advice. The resulting film offers many images and artifacts that would prove to be extremely accurate when space travel became a reality. The human struggles with

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is Steven Spielberg's extraordinary film about a man named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who becomes obsessed with meeting extraterrestrials after encountering a UFO on an abandoned road one night. Against the wishes of his wife (Teri Garr) and children, Neary, along with another witness to the sighting (Melinda Dillon), travels to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Director Francois Truffaut costars as Claude Lacombe, one of the organizers of the project. Spielberg hoped to follow up the huge success of JAWS with a low-budget film that would be an easy shoot, but, thanks in part to the complicated special effects, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS quickly snowballed into being an expensive endeavor but a commercial and artistic success.
