The Man Who Fell to Earth- Criterion Collection (DVD)
In Nicolas Roeg`s sci-fi tale based on the novel by Walter Tevis, a humanoid alien from a dried-up husk of a planet falls to Earth in a spaceship--and later falls again metaphorically through alcohol abuse and the manipulations of a hostile culture. Arriving as a secret ambassador from a dying world, the masquerading Mr. Newton (David Bowie) patents several basic devices, including a self-developing color film and music recordings in the shape of small silver balls, in order to amass the tremendous capital necessary to build a spaceship. Along the way he solicits the help of a crack patent lawyer (Buck Henry) and a country-fried small-town girl (Candy Clark) who introduces him to gin, which he soon begins to substitute for his customary glass of water. Newton debates the reality of returning to his dead world only to have the choice made for him when he is swept from the launchpad by government agents. After serving his time with men in black, he is released, blinded by x rays, into the world. As a last drunken hurrah, he records an album under the name the Visitor with the hope that it may someday be broadcast and heard by his family and friends back home. Connected throughout by intercut clips of television programs, classic movies, and film soundtracks, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is an fine example of the postmodern technique of work referring to its own medium and history. Like much 1970s sci-fi, it is heavily indebted to Stanley Kubrick s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY; a scene in which an upset tray of cookies is juxtaposed with flying bodies echoes the film s flying bone and spaceship. Juxtaposing the free love enjoyed by Dr. Bryce (Rip Torn) with post-Altamont, pre-Reagan paranoia, Roeg`s film manages to be at once artistically groundbreaking and a crystallization of the post-Summer of Love era.

Star Trek: Nemesis (DVD)
In STAR TREK: NEMESIS, based on the STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION television series, the USS Enterprise is gearing up for a challenging mission. While responding to a call from the Romulan neutral zone, the crew comes across a signal on the nearby planet Remus. It turns out to be Data`s (Brent Spiner) less advanced brother, B-4 (also played by Spiner). Soon thereafter, Picard is confronted by Shinzon (Tom Hardy), who makes an offer of peace on behalf of the Romulans. As Starfleet enters into negotiations, they realize this treaty may have a twist. Shinzon presents himself as a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and as a simultaneous friend and foe. Though the baby faced Shinzon wears an intimidating shiny black metallic suit of armor, and spits his words through a nasty sneer, he is clearly no match for Picard. Meanwhile Data has a nifty side project debugging his clone, whose intentions are not as innocent as they may seem. As tension mounts between the crew of the Starship Enterprise and Shinzon`s Reman minions, resulting in riveting high-tech deep-space battle, a vital sacrifice must be made to save the day. STAR TREK: NEMESIS`s shocking ending will leave viewers hanging, anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series.

Fire and Ice/Frazetta: Painting with Fire (DVD)
This set is comprised of two fantasy films of the
sword and scorcery
vein, FIRE AND ICE and FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE.FIRE AND ICE: Celebrated sword-and-sorcery artist Frank Frazetta teams up with animation director Ralph Bakshi for this high-energy animated fantasy. It s a prehistoric battle of the elements as the dissolute ruler of the Ice World, Nekron (Sean Hannon), starts a war against the fire people using a massive, advancing glacier and armies of subhuman monsters as his weapons. When he arranges to have the fire king`s shapely daughter, Teegra (Cynthia Leake), kidnapped, the adventure begins as she escapes her captors and hooks up with Larn (Randy Norton), lone survivor of an earlier skirmish. With the aid of a mysterious dark warrior (based on Frazetta`s famous painting
The Death Dealer ), Lorn and Teegra fight the armies of Nekron as well as giant monsters, lesbian sorcerers, and other comic book delights. A thunderous classical score by William Kraft adds excitement to this violent, sexy, fast-moving film. It also benefits from unusual animation techniques that nicely complement the far-out imaginations of Frazetta, Bakshi, and screenwriters Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway.FRANZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE: Exploring the life and legacy of fantasy artist Frank Franzetta, this documentary paints a vivid picture of the path-blazing done by this man who overcame massive obstacles to ascend to the top of his genre. His distinctive style has virtually defined fantasy art for a decade, but Franzetta`s stature is made even more grandiose by the fact that it was attained while he was suffering from an undiagnosed thyroid condition. Moreover, six strokes forced the artist to switch his drawing hand from right to left, a setback he overcame as well. The film features appearances by Bo Derek, Glenn Danzig, Ralph Bakshi, and Forrest Ackerman, among others.
