THE PHILADELPHIA STORY boasts an incredible cast, but it's Katharine Hepburn's picture in more ways than one. It's 1860, and Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a Philadelphia heiress, is about to marry coal-company executive George Kittridge (John Howard). The wedding, promising to be the season's premier event, attracts the attention of magazine publisher Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), who sees it as an opportunity to break a story. Spy magazine's Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), Lord's ex-husband, is enlisted to gain access to the party, along with top scandal writer Macauley Connor (James Stewart, in an Oscar-winning role). However, the reporter is quickly smitten by the bride's charms--and he's not the only one. The film, based on the play by Phillip Barry, was first a Broadway sensation starring Hepburn, who acquired the screen rights, claimed the starring role, and chose the director, screenwriter, and lead cast. In addition to fine work by Grant and Stewart, notable supporting performances are delivered by Ruth Hussey and Virginia Weidler. French director Lucas Belvaux attempted one of the most daring experiments in modern cinema with 2002`s THE TRILOGY, a trio of interconnected films that focus on the same characters and storylines but employ three different genres for vastly divergent meanings and textures. The first film, ON THE RUN, takes the form of a noirish thriller for its story of a leftist revolutionary who escapes from prison and is doggedly pursued by a troubled cop with a drug-addled wife. The second film, AN AMAZING COUPLE, is an unconventional romantic comedy about a middle-aged hypochondriac whose strange behavior leads his wife to believe he is having an affair. The third and final film, AFTER LIFE, is a moving melodrama that connects the previous films` disparate threads for a RASHOMON-like study of how an event or character cannot always be understood from a single vantage point. Director Gary Fleder (THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, KISS THE GIRLS) tackles best-selling novelist John Grisham's tale of jury manipulation in RUNAWAY JURY. Jury consultant Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) can spin any jury in favor of his client. At least he always could before. But his latest job may turn out to be his most challenging.
