Galaxie 500 - Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste (DVD)
This program features extensive live performance footage, television appearances, and music videos that capture the genius of alternative rock band Galaxie 500. Included are performances at the Cambridge, Massachusetts Middle East, featuring previously unreleased material Back in Your Life and Buzz in My Head, the Kennel Club in San Francisco, and Club Lingerie in Hollywood. Also featured are two full 1990 concerts, recorded in Atlanta and London.Boston's Galaxie 500, from 1987-1991, produced transcendent, moody rock that placed them at the forefront of the shoegazer and slowcore movements popularized by bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Formed by high school friends Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski, and Naomi Yang, the band quickly found widespread popularity in Europe, and signed to the legendary Rough Trade label for their second album, ON FIRE. After producing only a few stellar recordings, invoking musical references from The Velvet Underground to the Beatles, the group disbanded, but continued to work on their own, with Wareham forming the group Luna, with members of The Feelies and The Chills, and Krukowski and Yang working together.

Mark Romanek - The Work of Director Mark Romanek (DVD)
The Directors Label continues in its quest to document the work of cutting-edge music video directors by following their extensive profiles of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and Chris Cunningham with this overview of Mark Romanek`s work. Romanek`s eclectic career saw him helm his first feature film in 1988 (STATIC) before establishing himself as a music video director with promo`s for a diverse array of artists. Among the musicians whose work has been lensed by Romanek are pop diva Madonna ( Bedtime Story,
Rain ), rock legends David Bowie ( Jump, They Say ) and Mick Jagger ( God Gave Me Everything ), rap superstar Jay Z ( 99 Problems ), indie-rockers Beck ( Devil s Haircut ) and Weezer ( El Scorcho ), and many others. All of these are included here, alongside what is possibly Romanek`s greatest achievement: a memorable, bittersweet last video for the late, great Johnny Cash, with his cover of Nine Inch Nails`
Hurt.
As he slowly edges back into the motion picture industry with features such as ONE HOUR PHOTO and A COLD CASE, this anthology provides a welcome look back on the work of a director who helped elevate the lowly music video into an acceptable artform.

DJ Shadow - Live! In Tune and On Time (DVD)
The work of DJ Shadow is widely regarded as being highly innovative in the electronica field. Embodying elements of hip hop, ambient music, rock, soul, R&B, and just about every genre under the sun, Shadow brews up a potent mixture of styles to create an entirely fresh sound. A vinyl junkie and fiendish sampler, his records break down boundaries, and have won over an impressive following of music fans eager to hear something new. His tracks take on a whole new dimension when performed live, as this show from London`s Brixton Academy in 2002 illustrates. Among the tracks performed are
What Does Your Soul Look Like,
Stem/Long Stem,
High Noon,
and many others.

DIG! (DVD)
Ondi Timoner's electrifying documentary tells a cautionary tale about the dangers and trappings of the rock& roll lifestyle. Shot over a seven-year span beginning in the mid-1990s, DIG! follows two bands, the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, as they befriend each other, have a falling out, and find their careers heading in severely opposite directions. Mastermind behind the'60s-influenced Brian Jonestown Massacre, the talented and prolific, yet deeply damaged, Anton Newcombe appeared to be headed for superstardom. In 1995 he formed a close bond with Courtney Taylor, leader of power-pop band the Dandy Warhols, and the two began to conceive of a musical revolution. Unfortunately, Newcombe's mental fragility and egotistical behavior continually sabotaged his chances of ever scoring a record deal with a major label. Meanwhile, Taylor and his bandmates signed with Capitol Records, and, after initially lackluster album sales, the Dandy Warhols began to explode overseas. Challenged by their success, Newcombe retreated further into his shell and the relationship dissolved, bringing a painful end to a once-hopeful era. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, DIG! is mandatory viewing for anyone who is interested in the music industry. Timoner's fascinating film addresses several poignant issues, such as the dangerously thin line between success and anonymity, as well as stability versus insanity.
