One man's descent is the focus of this experimental work, the first feature from Chicago independent James Fotopoulos (MIGRATING FORMS). This journey follows only one character for two and a half hours, and creates a unique psychological portrait, captured from both an objective point of view as well as deep within the man's mind. This man (Matthew Buckley) is filmed in long sequences in an obscenely lonely apartment. His isolation increases his unstable state of mind as the man begins to dissect a cow's head, masturbate, and vomit profane, nonsensical rants. Comparisons to David Lynch and David Cronenberg are inevitable (particularly considering the appearance of a cyst on the film's hero, a regular Fotopoulos theme), but writer/director/producer/sound editor Fotopoulos has such an arresting, original style that no comparison makes sense. ZERO was shot in black and white and contains tinted sequences.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual LayerText/Galleries: Original Artwork Storyboards Stills/Photos - 1. Director Brian De Palma made a name for himself with this twisty shocker starring a pre-SUPERMAN Margot Kidder as the mysterious Danielle. A French-Canadian model, Danielle may be covering up a murder to protect her recently separated homicidal Siamese twin--or maybe not. Plucky female reporter Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt) witnessed the killing from her apartment window but can't convince some clueless cops to investigate, so she hires a private detective (Charles Durning) to help her solve the case. Eventually she winds up at a mysterious sanitarium in the clutches of Danielle's creepy psychiatrist husband, Emil (William Finley), and begins to unravel the shocking truth.Scary, funny, clever, and firmly rooted in a Hitchcockian universe, SISTERS set the tone for many of De Palma's future works, including DRESSED TO KILL and RAISING CAIN. Bernard Herrmann's score even recalls his work on PSYCHO--only this time he's spruced things up with bizarre electronic effects. However, not all of De Palma's work pays debt to the master of suspense. An innovative use of split-screen techniques to heighten the suspense is distinctly his own, as is a memorably twisted black-and-white hallucination sequence.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 16:9Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Subtitles - English - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Production Interview - 1. The Man Who Laughs (DVD)
This horror classic was produced by Universal (beginning that studio's string of brilliant horror movies) in response to the success of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Universal chose two luminaries of German Expressionism, director Paul Leni and actor Conrad Veidt, for the film and in doing so introduced a new and highly influential aesthetic to American movies. The film stars Veidt as Gwynplaine, the son of an aristocrat who is kidnapped for political reasons before being disfigured by a gypsy surgeon, who leaves the boy's face paralyzed in a contorted smile. Finding refuge in a traveling theatre troupe, Gwynplaine's lineage is eventually discovered and he soon finds himself being pulled back into the social and political world he was taken from as a boy. Featuring a masterful performance from Veidt along with beautiful and haunting photography, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is one of the silent era's great horror films.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Material: Additional Footage - 1. The Last Wave - Criterion Collection (DVD)
David Burton (Richard Chamberlain) is a young Sydney tax lawyer with a wife, two young daughters, and a very comfortable suburban existence. His life takes a strange turn, however, when he is asked to defend a group of Aborigines who have been accused of murder. The mysterious young men are maddeningly reticent when it comes to discussing the circumstances, though, and he finds that factors beyond his comprehension are involved when he begins having disturbing watery visions and ghostly sightings of Chris (David Gulpilil, WALKABOUT), one of the men involved in the murder. Already in over his head, David begins an odyssey involving strange natural occurrences in downtown Sydney, the Aboriginal concept of dream time, and what seems to the end of the world as we know it.Peter Weir infuses his film with a spooky sense of dread that gives the viewer the sensation of entering a private world. Through a combination of Chamberlain's restrained performance and a handful of minimal yet well-chosen visual effects, THE LAST WAVE is able to create a believable aura of the impending apocalypse. With its thoughtful pitting of modern society against an ancient culture, it stands as one of the touchstones of 1970s Australian cinema.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.77RSDLAudio: Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Production Interview - 1. The Amityville Horror (DVD)
This frightening remake of the 1979 horror classic from producer Michael Bay (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) delves deeper into the supposedly true story of supernatural events that occurred in a Long Island, New York home in the `70s. When George and Kathy Lutz (Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George) come across a beautiful river-front colonial home being sold for a steal, they suspect a catch. Once informed that the home was the site of a grisly mass murder, they decide to buy the house anyway and eagerly move in, bringing with them Kathy`s three children from a previous marriage. While no one can deny that the house is rife with spooky sounds, the family members try to put their fears at bay. But over time, strange occurrences start happening, becoming more and more frequent, and these events start to have a transformative effect on several family members. Kathy`s daughter starts to act bizarrely, ending up in a variety of life-threatening situations, led by her new, not-so-imaginary friend Jody (one of the children slaughtered in the house years before by her older brother). Likewise, something strange seems to be happening to George. His usually sweet demeanor is replaced with a hostile one, and he starts cruelly taking out his aggression on Kathy`s children. Kathy`s original assumption that a house cannot be evil is challenged as she watches her husband transform into the sort of man that just might be capable of murdering his family. Faster-paced than the original, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR
keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with quick editing, suspenseful music, and moderately graphic violence. The two leads give quality performances, and seem to inhabit the decade in which the story is set despite the film`s slick, contemporary production.

The Fog (UR/FS/DVD)
An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick (Tom Welling, from TV's SMALLVILLE), and his wayward girlfriend, Elizabeth (Maggie Grace, from TV's LOST), to save the day. All three are related to the town's founding fathers, with whom the shipbound ghosts have an ancient score to settle. What that score is no one seems to know, but they need to find out, fast. DeRay Davis (BARBERSHOP) provides comic relief as Nick's lusty first mate, but the real scene stealer here is the fog itself, which is much more animated than in the 1980 John Carpenter original. Thanks to some nice CGI work, it slithers in, around, and under everything. Though gussied up with an angst-rock soundtrack and beautiful young TV actors, THE FOG is, at heart, a good old fashioned ghost story, replete with period costumes and inter-dimensional romance. Director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA) is good at capturing little details like the eerie tinkling of deep-sea fishing hooks hung out to dry, the textures of moisture-beaded shower stall doors, and the perfectly toned skin of lead actress Grace as she wanders around in her negligee. John Carpenter and his partner, Debra Hill--co-creators of the first FOG--served as producers.
