I Love Your Work (DVD)

I Love Your Work (DVD)
The achingly hip I LOVE YOUR WORK arrives with trappings familiar to any keen-eyed independent film fan. With a cast that includes Giovanni Ribisi (LOST IN TRANSLATION) and Franke Potente (RUN LOLA RUN), a big-star-in-a-cameo-role appearance (in this case, Vince Vaughn), and the by now obligatory roles for people you wouldn`t expect to see in such a movie (Jason Lee, Elvis Costello), Adam Goldberg`s debut feature is positively dripping in cool, and he seems to have looked up every contact in his Rolodex for I LOVE YOUR WORK--even calling on the Flaming Lips` Steven Drozd to carve out a few songs for the soundtrack. Ribisi stars as Gray Evans, a hip movie star who--between endless loft parties and frolics with his wife Mia Lang (Potente)--worries he is being stalked. Grappling with dreams about an ex-girlfriend (played by Christina Ricci) and obsessed with a young filmmaker, John (Joshua Jackson), who reminds Gray of his pre-fame self, he hires an investigator (Jared Harris) to help calm his insecurities. After setting out his stall, Goldberg subsequently takes his audience on a disquieting thrill-ride through Gray`s life, beautifully capturing the preternatural world he inhabits. As Gray becomes more and more obsessed with John and John s girlfriend, Jane (Marisa Coughlan), Goldberg steers the movie into bizzaro-world, with hints of work by directors such as David Lynch coming thick and fast. While Goldberg s film playfully struggles to reflect the dizzy confusion of its chief protagonist, story threads are left dangling, and the audience are made to do a lot of work; but it`s a rewarding experience for those who are willing to delve into this excellent meditation on celebrity culture at the dawn of the 21st century.

The Ballad of Jack and Rose (DVD)
Writer-director Rebecca Miller's third film (following ANGELA and PERSONAL VELOCITY) is a powerful, poignant drama about a father and daughter living on their own on the outskirts of nowhere, just as developers are starting to move in. Daniel Day-Lewis (Miller's husband) stars as Jack Slavin, a 1960s holdover who is a man of the earth, working the land and defending his territory while eschewing such modernities as television. Jack is devoted to his daughter, Rose (Camilla Belle), a 16-year-old girl who is equally as devoted to him. But Jack is sick, so he asks his girlfriend, Kathleen (Catherine Keener), along with her two sons, Rodney (Ryan McDonald) and Thaddius (Paul Dano), to come from the mainland and move in with them, thinking they can be Rose's family once he dies. But Rose begins to act out in dangerous ways, threatening to severely damage the already fragile relationships that are developing. Day-Lewis gives a shattering, emotional performance as Jack, and he is matched well with Belle, who seems wise beyond her years. Filmed on location on Prince Edward Island, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE is a harrowing, intimate film set in a beautiful, lush land. This film screened at the 2005 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

Nine Lives (DVD)
IN THEATERS OCTOBER 14, 2005Director Rodrigo Garcia has become a master of short film anthologies, with this, his third venture into the genre. His previous work in this field--THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER (which stitched together five separate stories) and TEN TINY LOVE STORIES (comprised of ten tales)--was shot in 2001, and featured predominantly female casts. The vignettes that make up NINE LIVES follow in the same vein, with Garcia taking brief dips into the lives of various women who are all floundering in relationships with important people in their lives. An all-star cast helps Garcia achieve his vision, and a highly skilled team behind the camera ensures that the action is perfectly executed, as each story is shot in just one single take.Garcia doesn`t construct conventional narratives for his stories, he just drops viewers into situations, then pulls them out before any conclusions are reached. Some of the women we are exposed to are Robin Wright Penn, who plays a pregnant woman running into a former lover in a supermarket, resulting in a bout of anguish and self doubt; Ruth (Sissy Spacek), a woman caught up in an affair at a seedy motel; and Holly Hunter, playing a woman alarmed at her boyfriend`s antisocial behavior. The stories are thrilling in their inconclusiveness, with Garcia leaving plenty of question marks about where these women are heading with their lives. Indeed, the first story in the film ends just as it seems to be starting, with prison inmate Sandra (Elpida Carrillo) letting out a howling, primal scream as she is pulled away from her daughter by prison guards, leaving the audience hanging in midair as the next story immediately begins. A breathtaking work that plays beautifully with the cinematic medium, NINE LIVES is an exhausting and demanding piece of work.

G (DVD)
Although it might sound unlikely, G brings F.Scott Fitzgerald`s THE GREAT GATSBY to the hip-hop generation, with a thoroughly modern adaptation of the literary classic. Summer G (Richard T. Jones) seems to have everything a hip-hop mogul could possibly want after building a career for himself as a rap producer. But he still pines for Sky (Chenoa Maxwell), his former lover who he let slip through his fingers. Cleverly locating the film in the Hamptons, where many hip-hop millionaires have taken up residence, Christopher Scott Cherot`s film has a glossy MTV sheen to it, but still manages to stir the emotions that lie at the core of Fitzgerald`s novel.

The Secret Lives of Dentists (DVD)
Hope Davis and Campbell Scott play married dentists in this insightful dramatic comedy from director Alan Rudolph (AFTERGLOW, DOROTHY PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE). Based on the novel THE AGE OF GRIEF by Jane Smiley, the story begins with husband David's suspicion that his wife (and mother of their three adorable daughters) is having an affair. The details of their family life and David's mounting suspicion are brilliantly evoked via overlapping dialogue, great editing, and masterful camerawork. David's jealous mind soars onto some hilarious flights of fancy and eventually caustic comedian Denis Leary turns up as his cigar-smoking alter-ego, expressing all the independent and antisocial traits David has tried so long to repress for the sake of his family. All of this culminates in a hilarious yet harrowing week when the family is hit by a flu virus.SECRET LIVES' performances are very strong, with Scott proving himself an actor of great restraint and subtlety. The young actresses who play the daughters are uniformly talented, as is Robin Tunney (THE CRAFT) as a dental assistant. The lion's share of credit is due to director Rudolph, who is in top form with this film, displaying his mastery of the ensemble cast, camera, and audio tricks; Rudolph and his mentor, Robert Altman, are of the few directors capable of working with such perceptive, funny, and warmly human results.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material:Gag Reel Audio Commentary - 1. Black Hawk Down (DVD)
On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a desk jockey who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailers Featurette - 1. The Woodsman (DVD)
With a 12-year prison stretch reaching an end, convicted pedophile Walter (Kevin Bacon) faces an uncertain walk back into the free world in THE WOODSMAN. Attempting to keep his previous indiscretions sheltered from prying eyes, Walter tries to piece together his shattered life by finding a job and an apartment. The first task is relatively simple, with the ex-con finding employment at a lumberyard thanks to his natural talent for woodcraft. An apartment comes less easily, but Walter manages to secure a roof over his head in a building, which--in a cruel twist of irony--is located opposite an elementary school. Walter's brother-in-law Carlos (Benjamin Bratt) remains the only member of his family willing to keep in contact with him; his sister refuses all communication. Meanwhile, Sgt. Lucas (Mos Def) keeps a watchful eye over Walter's activities, while Walter makes faltering strides towards romance with his tough-as-nails co-worker, Vickie (Kyra Sedgwick). But as wary neighbors steel worried glances and make small-town gossip about him, Walter finds it inordinately difficult to keep his past life a secret. For this reformed character, the path to redemption comes strewn with cracked paving stones, which need to be carefully navigated with every tentative step he takes. The sensitivity with which the material in THE WOODSMAN is executed derives from a potent mix of intelligently written source material, wonderful performances (with Bacon in particular putting in a career-defining turn), and an authoritative vision from director Nicole Kassell (THE GREEN HOUR). At the heart of the movie lies a desolate character, guilty of a crime shrouded in taboo, but hoping against all reason that society will accord him a modicum of absolution. A fascinating portrait of a life caught in a state of perpetual turmoil, this is an audacious second feature from Kassell.

Ladies in Lavender (DVD)
Based on a short story by William J. Locke, two spinster sisters, Ursula and Janet (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith), live in an old house by the sea in 1930s Cornwall, England. Their pleasant but uneventful routine of beach walks, reading, sewing, and tea time is interrupted when Andreas, a handsome young Polish violinist (Daniel Bruhl, from GOODBYE, LENIN!) washes ashore, barely alive. The girls nurse him back to health and for the never-married Ursula it`s a case of first love far too late in life. She helps him overcome the language barrier, only to possibly lose him to a younger woman, the gorgeous visiting artist (Natasha McElhone) who recognizes his musical talent and is in a situation to help him. It`s a simple story, though a perfect showcase for the mastery of Dench and Smith, two of the greatest thespians of all time (though Miriam Margolyes steals many scenes as the no-nonsense housekeeper). The director, Charles Dance, is a major British actor himself, thus his grasp of the myriad subtleties of the art is spot-on here in his directorial debut. Period detail is also of key importance, and cinematographer Peter Biziou captures the invitingly homey yet windswept otherness of the locale and time. Music is also a key component here, and the violin passages attributed to Andreas are stunningly emotional.
