Through the Back Door (DVD)
Mary Pickford wrote the script for this little-screened but classic 1921 comedy. Young Jeanne's widowed mother marries a wealthy New York businessman, Elton Reeves. Unfortunately, he's not fond of children, and convinces his new wife to leave Jeanne with her Belgian nurse, Marie. She does, but finds herself dogged by guilt, and years later returns to retrieve her daughter. Marie is determined not to lose her beloved Jeanne, and tells the mother that her daughter is dead, but things change with the outbreak of WWII. Marie sends Jeanne to live in the US with her mother for her own safety. But upon arrival Jeanne is cowed by the massive estate and unfamiliar wealth she encounters, and goes to work as a maid for her mother's family. Some memorable comic moments ensue, before Jeanne finds herself forced to reveal her secret.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Bonus Short - CINDERELLA - Director James Kirkwood (53:00)Text/Photo Galleries: Stills - Stills Gallery Courtesy of Rob Brooks and Joe Yranski

Heart of the Hills (DVD)
Mary Pickford was the first internationally recognized Hollywood star, becoming America's golden girl and capturing hearts across the globe. She was also an astute businesswoman, founding United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and her husband Douglas Fairbanks to become the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. HEART O' THE HILLS was the last film she would make for a distributor not her own, and marked a movement away from the childlike roles she had become known for. Pickford stars as Mavis Hawn, an Appalachian girl from Kentucky whose world is invaded by a land-grabbing villain (Sam DeGrasse) from the city. Hawn vows revenge for the tragedy inflicted upon her family, and along the way she falls in love with Jason Honeycutt (Harold Goodwin). Adapted from the best-selling novel by John Fox, Jr. the film is an often brutal depiction of poverty, and a melodrama that achieved both critical and popular success, while extending Pickford's acting range considerably.DVD Features:Full Frame - 1.33Audio: Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Alternate Audio Track - 1. The Olive Thomas Collection - The Flapper/Olive Thomas: Everybody's Sweetheart (DVD)
Stories featuring the early 20th Century ingenue Olive Thomas abound, some adoring and others outraged, but the fact remains that she took Hollywood by storm with her unparalleled beauty, her fearless tongue, and her guileless charm. Tragically, her career met an early end when Thomas died under mysterious circumstances in Paris just before her 26th birthday, leaving her mark on cinematic history half-formed. Born into a poor Pennsylvania family in a small town, Olive abandoned an early marriage for the glamour of New York, and soon found her way into the Ziegfeld Follies, becoming a favorite among illustrators. But underneath the glitter of her life lay a dark underbelly, as she developed a reputation as a loose woman who was single-minded in her pursuit of a life of pleasure; in escaping that Pittsburgh mining town, she was determined to live the fantasy of the Hollywood starlet. Olive's enigmatic life is detailed in the fascinating documentary OLIVE THOMAS: EVERYBODY'S SWEETHEART, narrated by Rosanna Arquette and featuring interviews with director Allison Anders (GAS FOOD LODGING), Richard Ziegfeld, and Daniel Selznick. Also included is the delightful comedy, THE FLAPPER, starring Olive as the small-town Ginger King, who goes off to an East Coast boarding school where she lands in hot water. She boldly flirts with an older man, unwittingly getting involved with a couple of jewel thieves who entrust her with the loot. When she returns home to show off her new jewels, the criminals come after her, and she is left to her own devices to outsmart them.
