Lyubov (Charlotte Rampling) is brought home to her Russian estate after having fled to France amidst family tragedy. Returning home in 1900 after the liberation of the serfs, nothing seems to have changed. The mansion has been impeccably kept up and the trees in the cherry orchard are in romantic bloom. The reality, however, soon sets in: The family fortune has been squandered. Lyubov holds out for a miracle to save her home, her past, and her beloved orchard. When wealthy friend Lopakhin (Owen Teale), who grew up as a servant on the property,
recommends selling and developing the orchard land in order to save the property, he is met with fierce opposition from Lyubov and the family. With the mortgage date drawing nearer, Lyubov's hopes become as empty as the leafless wintry appearance of the trees in the orchard. The emotional intensity builds to a heartbreaking climax in Michael Cacoyannis' screen adaptation of Anton Chekhov's timeless play. Cacoyannis, in his seventies, directed and wrote the script from his own translation of the Russian masterwork. Lured (DVD) Lured (DVD) $21.57 » Lured (DVD)

Before being forever associated with melodrama, acclaimed director Douglas Sirk dabbled in other genres. LURED, a good example of this, is a witty and stylish thriller about a serial killer terrorizing the streets of London. Lucille Ball stars as Sandra, a sassy and beautiful taxi dancer, who decides to assist the police after her best friend becomes the latest victim of the Poet Killer, a mysterious murderer who lures women through classified ads. Sandra launches on an endless quest, answering every suspicious ad in the paper in search of the elusive killer, whose only clues are enigmatic poems based on the poetry of Beaudelaire. En route to the real killer, Sandra encounters a ridiculous cast of ominous characters, from an insane dressmaker (played by an arch and hilarious Boris Karloff) and a shady character who traffics in white slavery. The killer still eludes Sandra and the Scotland Yard, and her growing affection for the stylish nightclub owner Robert Flemming proves to bring more complications than she imagines, leading to a surprising and ingenious climax. Ball is sharp and glamorous as the unwitting detective and Sirk's swift and fast-paced direction melds humor with suspense to created a highly entertaining thriller.DVD FeaturesRegion 1 Encoding

Walkabout - Criterion Collection (DVD) Walkabout - Criterion Collection (DVD) $21.57 » Walkabout - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Nicolas Roeg's solo directorial debut is a haunting, unconventional narrative film that presents a bleak vision of civilized life as arid and unrewarding. Abandoned in the Australian outback, two young white children (Jenny Agutter and Roeg's son Lucien) stumble upon an adolescent Aborigine (David Gulpilil), who is performing a walkabout. In this ritualistic six-month journey, the boy must learn to survive by himself in the imposing desert. Communication is a problem, although more for the girl than for her little brother, who still has a child's ability to communicate simply and directly. The two teenagers fail to connect for a variety of reasons, mostly due to the girl's lack of interest in a culture that is unfamiliar and different from her own. Ultimately, the differences become too much to bear, resulting in a tragic conclusion that adds an even more somber denouement to Roeg's already grim vision. Based on the novel by James Vance Marshall, WALKABOUT is a powerful commentary on pastoral simplicity versus cosmopolitan clutter, and features stunning cinematography from Roeg.Includes 5 minutes of additional footage and the theatrical trailer.

Broken Blossoms (DVD) Broken Blossoms (DVD) $21.57 » Broken Blossoms (DVD)

This strangely beautiful silent film from D.W. Griffith is also one of his more grim efforts; an indictment of child abuse and the violence of western society. An idealistic Asian (Richard Barthelemess) travels to the west in hopes of spreading the Buddha's message of peace to the round-eyed sons of turmoil and strife. Instead he winds up a disillusioned, opium-smoking shopkeeper in London's squalid Limehouse District. Down the street, a poor waif (Lillian Gish) suffers horrific abuse at the hands of her boxer father (Donald Crisp). When fortune delivers the battered girl into the Asian's tender care, a strange and beautiful love blossoms between them, a love far too fragile to survive their brutal environment. Griffith directed with his unique blend of poetry and realism, and Miss Gish delivers a typically first-rate performance as the girl; the result is a work of art that's both eloquent and crushing. The film was originally presented with color tinting and a musical score composed by Griffith, both of which may vary in different video and film versions.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseOriginal Orchestral Score
