Daresalam (DVD)
One of the first feature films to come out of the civil war-torn country of Chad, this complex, nuanced drama particularizes the misery of war through the story of two childhood friends. Koni and Djimi live in the fictional Daresalam, which is ruled by an oppressive, thoroughly corrupt government. The extortion practiced on their rural village is reminiscent of that which became the impetus for Chad's tax riots of the early 1970s. When the village leader is wrongfully arrested, Koni lashes out at the officials, leading to all-out war. The friends join the revolutionary group, FRAP, and fight for communist principles, though the rebels are not without their disagreements and experience infighting of their own. Koni and Djimi eventually arrive at divergent political beliefs which tear them apart, leading one down a path of compromise, while the other retains a stubborn idealism, no matter what the cost. Director Coelo makes use of stunning landscape photography to paint a poignant, achingly beautiful tale, refusing to take sides in a multifaceted, sympathetic depiction of war, which manages to offer a refreshing glimmer of optimism and hope.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.85

Possibly the best of the universally excellent films produced by the American Film Theatre, producer Ely Landau's program that allowed moviegoers to subscribe to film versions of classic plays, Peter Hall's THE HOMECOMING is a magnificent adaptation of Harold Pinter's play. In it, a successful philosophy professor named Teddy (Jayston) braces himself to return to his North London home for the first time in nine years to introduce his wife Ruth (Merchant) to his family. Berlin-Jerusalem (DVD)
BERLIN-JERUSALEM tells the story of two women who emigrate from Germany to Palestine in the 1940s. Tania (Rivka Neuman) is a revolutionary, eager to have a hand in the development of the new Jewish state. She battles the sexism of her new comrades, and urges them to make peace with their Arab neighbors. After her lover is killed in a skirmish with the Arabs, she becomes disillusioned. Else (Lisa Kreuzer), whose character is named for the poet, Else Lasker-Schuler, has an artist's temperament, and reluctantly leaves Berlin only when it becomes clear that the Nazis are a threat to every Jewish life. Gitai frequently inserts voiceovers of Lasker-Schuler's solemn poetry, to show how the events in her life influenced her work. The film is also strong and precise visually, as when a group of garishly made-up Berlin women on their way to a party stop and pose for the camera, invoking a painting by Ernst Kirchner. Throughout the film, Gitai captures a turmoil that is both personal and political, and, as is often the case in his work, the line between narrative and documentary is eventually blurred, as he forces the viewer to confront the story's similarities to Israel of the present day. This film was screened as part of an Amos Gitai retrospective organized by New York City's Anthology Film Archives.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85

Dementia: Daughter of Horror (DVD)
John J. Parker's wonderfully unsettling first film has been unavailable in its original form since its release. Until the release of this video, it had been seen only in a heavily edited version titled DAUGHTER OF HORROR, which is also included in this release, with narration by Ed McMahon. The original version of the film is completely silent, excepting the eerie George Antheil score, and follows a dreamlike twisted logic as it details the existence of a tormented young woman, Gamin, who is clearly insane. Waking from a night in a cheap hotel, Gamin goes on a hellish journey through skid row, where she experiences many nightmarish encounters with pimps, winos, molesters, and other unsavory characters. Increasingly haunted by remembrances of her tormented childhood, Gamin moves deeper into her dementia as the night wears on, transforming into a knife wielding bohemian who despises men.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseAdditional Release Materials: Additional Feature - 1.
