This seminal dance film, created Powell and Pressburger, in which an impresario takes a ballerina under his wing, deftly combines interpretive dance with drama. This acclaimed adaption of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale results in a marked triumph of artistic collaboration and modernity. All That Heaven Allows - Criterion Collection (WS/DVD)
In ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, Douglas Sirk's haunting suburban morality play, Jane Wyman plays Cary Scott, a wealthy middle-aged widow in love with a younger man considered by those around her to be far below her social standing. Her torrid affair with Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson), a handsome, earthy gardener, quickly creates unbearable societal pressure for Cary. Giving in to the scathing criticism of her stodgy neighbors and her materialistic children, Cary severs contact with Ron. She then discovers--perhaps too late--that her heart cannot be so easily caged.Wyman delivers a strong, emotive performance, and Hudson smolders as her feverish romantic interest. ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, marked by Sirk's distinctive, lavish visual style, stands as a searing example of how materialism can result in alienation from natural feelings. The film was remade in 1974 with additional interracial themes by German director (and unabashed Sirk fan) Rainer Werner Fassbinder as ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL; and later paid homage by Todd Haynes in his 2002 reworking FAR FROM HEAVEN.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Documentary - 1. Indiscretion of An American Wife - Criterion Collection (DVD)
Director Vittorio de Sica's first English language film, INDISCRETION OF AN AMERICAN WIFE, examines the personal romantic crises of a woman caught between romantic love and her duties as a wife and mother. The film takes place over a few hours in Rome's Terminal Station, where Mary (Jennifer Jones) is preparing to leave her Italian lover Giovanni (Montgomery Clift), who begs her to stay with him. While considering her options, Mary and Giovanni sneak off to an empty railroad car for one last passionate fling, but are soon discovered by a railway worker and arrested for indecent conduct. Mary must escape the charges to catch her train--unless she'd prefer to stay in Rome and never return to her family. Jones plays the role deftly, showing the clear pain that either decision will bring upon her, while De Sica firmly plants her dilemma against the swirl of activity and life in the Roman train station.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep Case

Robert Altman delivers one of his most startlingly enigmatic pictures with 3 WOMEN. Inspired by a dream Altman had in which he was shooting a film in the desert, the film tells the story of a shy, quiet girl named Pinky (Sissy Spacek), who starts working in a nursing home and strikes up a friendship with the talkative Millie (Shelley Duvall). The pair share an apartment and grow closer together, but a series of strange events cause their personas to change and morph in unexpected ways. Recalling the dreamy atmosphere of Ingmar Bergman's PERSONA, 3 WOMEN is Altman at his most deliriously inspired.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseDual LayerWidescreen - 2.35Audio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Henry V - Criterion Collection (DVD)
Laurence Olivier brings to vivid life Shakespeare's King Henry V, the epitome of the ideal Christian king. After a youth misspent in frivolity and common diversions, Prince Hal ascends the throne only to find himself on the brink of war with France over land and title disputes. Betrayed by his own archbishop in ascertaining the validity of the claims, Henry has to prove himself not only to his enemies but to his own advisers and his people. He thwarts a plot to assassinate him, meting out a swift but fair justice. When the French, unable to take him seriously, refuse to send reinforcements to a town under attack by Henry's troops, England wins the battle easily, yet Henry is merciful to the vanquished town. Though they are badly outnumbered, Henry leads his troops with courage and fortitude into the final, decisive battle against his enemies. Though foreign films were not competing at the time, Olivier won a special Academy Award for directing, producing, and starring in the film. His classic production of Shakespeare's 1599 play is filled with pomp and pageantry, terrific acting, and robust battle scenes.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep CaseAudio Commentary by Film Historian Bruce EderTheatrical TrailerSHAKESPEAREAN ROYALTY: Interactive Chronology of England's RulersStills Gallery

Enemy at the Door - Series 2 (DVD)
This British series appeared briefly in 1978 and returned for another short run in 1980. The ambitious war drama is set in World War II during the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands. Combining the dramatic tension created by a talented cast with archival footage of the actual conflict, ENEMY AT THE DOOR achieved a realism rarely seen on the small screen. Particularly groundbreaking is the use of shifting points of view and having major characters give their lives protecting their homeland.DVD Features:Region 14-Disc SetKeep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Web LinksText/Galleries: Photo Gallery

Do the Right Thing - Criterion Collection (DVD)
Spike Lee's racial and political filmmaking bent is given the full treatment with this simmering expose of racial tensions in a New York City neighborhood one scorching summer day. The film, written by Lee (and nominated for an Oscar), follows a group of racially diverse inhabitants from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood as they spend their day trying to avoid the oppressive heat. These include African American pizza deliveryman Mookie (Lee), the racially sensitive Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito), and the silent, boom-box-blasting Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn). Also thrown into the mix are Sal (an Oscar-nominated Danny Aiello), the Italian-American proprietor of Sal's Pizzeria, as well as his two sons, Pino (John Turturro) and Vito (Richard Edson), who hold completely opposing attitudes when it comes to race. After Buggin' Out tries to organize a boycott of Sal's because of the lack of racial diversity on his shop's Wall of Fame, the tensions explode in an act of senseless violence. Lee's film is an electric work of political entertainment that confronts sensitive racial issues head-on. He deftly blends humor and drama as well as using specific music to further amplify his theme (Public Enemy's song Fight the Power actually becomes the film's main catalyst for action). Boldly closing the film with opposing quotes from Malcolm X and Martin Luther King on the nature of race relations, Lee leaves it up to the viewer to decide if Mookie's actions were the correct ones. Aiello and Esposito are standouts in an all-star cast that includes Lee himself, his sister Joie, discovery Rosie Perez, and the married team of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Always one to spark controversy, Lee's summer drama finds the filmmaker at the peak of his craft.

Billy Liar - Criterion Collection (DVD)
BILLY LIAR was an immediate sensation as first a novel, then a hit play--both written by Keith Waterhouse, who also served as screenwriter on the film. Director John Schlesinger's screen version was a British landmark in the fertile cinema of the late 1950s and early'60s, and launched the career of Julie Christie, who plays Liz, one of Billy's flames. A young Englishman named Billy Fisher (Tom Courtenay) dreams of escaping from his dull working-class family and his dead-end job as an undertaker's assistant. In constant conflict with his parents and with the many women with whom he is romantically involved (he is engaged to two), Billy regularly escapes into a rich fantasy world. Sometimes he imagines himself to be the powerful dictator of a small country. In another fantasy, he wants to become the scriptwriter for a popular comedian on television. Unfortunately, he often blurs the line between fantasy and reality, which is exactly the reason that everybody calls him Billy Liar.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Single Side - Dual LayerRSDLAudio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
