Hell House (DVD) Hell House (DVD) $16.12 » Hell House (DVD)

George Ratliff's stirring documentary sheds light on one of late-20th Century America's most confounding creations, the Hell House. Providing a bizarre twist on the traditional haunted house formula, Hell Houses are church-funded, elaborately staged productions that trade fictitious monsters for the so-called demons that haunt our everyday lives--demons such as abortion, suicide, and homosexuality. Brought to you by the parishioners at your local Pentecostal or Southern Baptist churches, Hell Houses aim to frighten nonbelievers into a life of purity (as they see it) by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Ratliff's impressively unobtrusive camera takes the audience behind the scenes of one of America's most notorious Hell Houses, sponsored by the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Cedar Hill, Texas, following the outlandish production from its pre-planning stages all the way through its wildly successful two-week run. Rather than merely presenting these people--and this spectacle--as an outrageous example of reverence gone bonkers, Ratliff takes the time to establish the humanity of each participant, which adds another layer to the film. Frustrating, hysterical, and stimulating, HELL HOUSE is a testament to the saying truth is stranger than fiction. This film screened in April 2002 in New York City as part of the Gen Art Film Festival.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAdditional Release Material: Additional Footage - 1. Mad Dog Prosecutors (DVD) Mad Dog Prosecutors (DVD) $16.1 » Mad Dog Prosecutors (DVD)

After building a successful business from the bottom up, the 1990s saw Micheal Zinn fulfilling what many consider to be the American dream. He had no reason to think that his entrepreneurial skills would make him the subject of a Federal investigation. This explains his surprise when, in 1996, a knock on the door quickly escalated to a brutal prosecution for a wide variety of offenses he had no knowledge of. By telling Zinn's story, filmmaker Russell Craigh Richardson highlights a disturbingly common practice of the justice system. Based on the accounts published in Zinn's book MAD DOG PROSECUTORS AND OTHER HAZZARDS OF AMERICAN BUSINESS, this documentary reveals the powerless position individuals too often find themselves in when unfairly targeted by their own government.DVD FeaturesRegion (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: (unspecified) - English

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (DVD) Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (DVD) $15.79 » Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (DVD)

IN THEATRES: APRIL 22, 2005 (NY, HOUSTON)This searing examination of the Enron accounting scandal reveals the psychology of greed and corporate corruption that facilitated the company`s rise to power and also its fall. When Enron went bankrupt in 2001, the principals walked away millionaires--but later faced legal proceedings and jail sentences. Meanwhile, many employees and investors were left with nothing, not even their 401k retirement savings. Shedding light on the new economy of the 1990s when predictions and book-cooking flourished without actual profits, the film shows how it was not Enron alone but a network of bankers, traders, and accountants who turned a blind eye to the company`s clearly suspicious numbers. CEO Ken Lay and top dogs Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow give candid interviews that illustrate their skill at deflecting hard questions and egotistically boasting about the company`s success. In one of the company`s cold and calculated moves--which caused the California power outages, and lead to the ousting of governor Gray Davis--Enron employees are shown laughing at forest fires. Unbelievable footage of employees reveals unbridled greed, lust for risk-taking, and guiltless cheating, all while thinking they could never be caught. Finally, a few brave whistle-blowers stepped forward, including Bethany McLean, author of the Enron novel upon which this film is based, who wrote an article in Fortune magazine calling the company`s bluff. A remarkable documentary which packages the events of the scandal into a cohesive story, this is one film not to miss. This film screened in the 2005 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
