Off The Menu: The Last Days of Chasen's (DVD)
In 1936, vaudeville performer Dave Chasen opened a modest restaurant on the edge of West Hollywood, serving up a specialty chili which, according to legend, he originally concocted in the kitchen of director Frank Capra. Over the next 60 years, Chasen's restaurant rose to culinary and cultural fame as it catered to Hollywood's elite--Humphrey Bogart, Rock Hudson, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, and Elizabeth Taylor all dined on Chasen's famous fare--as well as U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and royalty. So when the legendary eatery finally closed its doors in 1995, filmmakers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (AMERICAN SPLENDOR) set out to document Chasen's final days through archival footage and interviews with management, staff and celebrity regulars such as Quentin Tarantino, Sharon Stone, Jay Leno, and John Travolta, resulting in a nostalgic homage to the golden age of Hollywood and the end of an era.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Smothered (DVD)
Focusing on an important time in American television history, SMOTHERED is a documentary about the Emmy award-winning CBS television show THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR, originally broadcast between 1967 and 1969. With their affable demeanor, traditional folk-tune routines, and and semi-Vaudevillian comedy, Tom and Dick Smothers delighted and challenged their faithful audience. Interviews with celebrity writers, performers, and news makers such as Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, and Rob Reiner peppered the show with dynamic conversation. In addition, the show's open forum for Vietnam War protest and commentary on the popular drug culture of the time stirred up quite a bit of controversy. Week after week, censors banned whole segments. One of the most famous instances of censorship was singer Pete Seeger's performance of the antiwar anthem, Waist Deep In The Big Muddy. Eventually, the show's social consciousness was the reason for its undoing, and it was cancelled, despite being the first program to give the long-running, seemingly unchallengeable BONANZA a run for its ratings money. As seen on the Bravo Network, SMOTHERED is directed by Maureen Muldaur. Including previously unavailable material, the film reveals the complete story behind the show's cancellation. The Smothers Brothers themselves get in on the storytelling action, making this an indispensable guide to a ground breaking television show and its impact on the culture of the era.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital 2.0 - EnglishInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene AccessText/Photo Galleries: Biography - 1. Keep the River on Your Right: A Modern Cannibal Tale (DVD)
This extraordinary documentary is the story of 78-year-old Tobias Schneebaum, a seemingly mild-mannered man who has lived an amazing life. Schneebaum grew up in Brooklyn, studied to be a Rabbi and a painter, and in the 1950s decided to travel to Peru. There, he journeyed deep into the Amazon to live with an isolated native tribe. After a year in the jungle, Schneebaum returned to civilization with stories that he recounted in his book KEEP THE RIVER ON YOUR RIGHT, including a raid on another tribe that ended with murder and ritualistic cannibalism. This documentary follows Schneebaum as he lectures in New York and on a vacation cruise to New Guinea, as well as on a return trip to Peru, where he meets natives who still remember him after over forty years have passed. Schneebaum is one of the most complex and fascinating individuals ever seen in film: a gay, Jewish New Yorker who abandoned everything for an entire year and wandered out into Amazon jungle. This film also includes appearances by Schneebaum's childhood neighbor and friend, Norman Mailer, and footage of Schneebaum's appearance on The Mike Douglas Show, which shocked audiences and guests alike.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Deleted ScenesInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene AccessText/Photo Gallery: Photo/Sketch Gallery (with Original Art by Tobias Schneebaum) Color Illustrations by Tobias Schneebaum (From the Book JUNGLE JOURNEY) Biographies - 1.
