Fallen Champ: The Untold Story of Mike Tyson (DVD)
Using rare footage and interviews, Oscar-winning director Barbara Kopple offers insight into the life and career of former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. This unauthorized biography follows Tyson s rags-to-riches-to-prison story from his days as a troubled child in Brooklyn through his meteoric rise to fame in the boxing world to his incarceration for rape. Interviews with former associates and personalities from the sports and boxing worlds reveal Tyson as a warmhearted kid in search of affection whose killer instinct--his best weapon in the ring--ultimately may have gotten the better of him. The film examines Tyson s relationship with his mentor and father figure, Cus D Amato, and his eventual migration to the camp of controversial boxing promoter Don King following the death of one of his managers. Kopple looks closely at Tyson s volatile eight-month roller-coaster marriage to actress Robin Givens and delves deeply into the rape charges levied against him by beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington, for which he was convicted. Archival footage and interviews and insight from journalists, former Tyson trainers, boxing promoters, and Tyson s former girlfriends, among others, add substance to a fascinating story.

Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (DVD)
Utilizing the same cinema verite style as his groundbreaking documentary PRIMARY, award-winning filmmaker Robert Drew once again turned to John F. Kennedy as the subject of his film CRISIS. In June of 1963, President Kennedy faced one of the most explosive conflicts of his administration: despite a federal court order, Alabama Governor George Wallace vowed to personally prevent two black students from entering the all-white University of Alabama. Happy with Drew's work on PRIMARY, Kennedy allowed the filmmaker and his team of cameramen--Richard Leacock, James Lipscomb, D.A. Pennebaker, and Hope Ryden--to enter the White House and record the presidential crisis as it unfolded. With multiple hand-held cameras, unprecedented access to the Oval Office, and intimate footage of JFK and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, CRISIS remains the first and only film to ever capture a U.S. President making critical, last-minute decisions during a crisis. Both VHS and DVD also include Drew's highly acclaimed film FACES OF NOVEMBER, which captures the reactions of Americans in mourning after the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Primary (DVD)
In 1960, former Life magazine correspondent Robert Drew changed the face of documentary filmmaking when he introduced the first of his powerful films about President John F. Kennedy. Utilizing a small portable camera and sync sound recorder for the first time ever, Drew and his team of cameramen--nascent documentarians Richard Leacock, Terrence McCartney Filgate, Albert Maysles, and D.A. Pennebaker--went on the road with the then-Senator from Massachusetts during the height of his 1960 Democratic primary run against Hubert Humphrey in Wisconsin. Unlike the directed and narrated documentaries of the day, Drew's uniquely mobile cameras moved with their subjects and captured the action as it unfolded, allowing for an unparalleled immediacy never before seen on film. The resulting documentary, PRIMARY, is considered one of the most groundbreaking moments in cinema history--not only for ushering in the the revolutionary movement known as cinema verite, but also for being an intimate portrait of both Kennedy and the American political experience.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. My Knees Were Jumping: Remembering the Kindertransport (DVD)
A forerunner to INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS, Melissa Hacker's powerful MY KNEES WERE TREMBLING remains the first feature-length documentary to reveal the human drama behind the Kindertransport movement of WWII, a British refugee policy that saved over 10,000 Jewish children from Eastern Europe by placing them in foster homes in England. Narrated by screen legend Joanne Woodward, the heartwrenching stories are detailed through archival footage and firsthand accounts from the survivors themselves--including Hacker's own mother Ruth Morley, a costume designer for films such as ANNIE HALL and TOOTSIE. As the former emigres share their memories, examine the guilt of survival, and discuss the fear of abandonment that haunts them to this day, Hacker's unforgettable film mounts to a poignant intimacy that will leave no viewer untouched. Nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Biography - 1. The True Meaning of Pictures (DVD)
Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal, director of the acclaimed Paul Bowles documentary LET IT COME DOWN, trains her eye on another artist of uncompromising vision in her film THE TRUE MEANING OF PICTURES. For over 30 years, Shelby Lee Adams has been photographing the impoverished mountain dwellers of his native eastern Kentucky, earning critical acclaim for his stark black-and-white portraits of Appalachian life--from families who live without plumbing or electricity to Pentecostal sects whose members drink strychnine and handle rattlesnakes during religious ceremonies. But Adams' work has also garnered a fair share of controversy: critics charge that his photographs exploit their subjects, perpetuate stereotypes about the rural poor, or are sometimes staged by Adams for greater effect. Baichwal's provocative documentary examines these issues and raises complex moral questions about the very nature of art through interviews with Adams' admirers and detractors, samples of his extraordinary work, and footage of the photographer revisiting some of his most famous subjects.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Stills/Photos Biographies - 1. See How They Run (DVD)
Four years prior to California's 2003 gubernatorial recall, the Golden State played host to another raucous political race that captured the public imagination. In San Francisco's 1999 mayoral runoff, incumbent Mayor Willie Brown faced opposition from 12 different candidates in his second-term reelection bid--but none more daunting than openly-gay standup comedian Tom Ammiano, who staged a historic grassroots write-in campaign that incited a dramatic showdown of epic proportion. Director Emily Morse documents the political mudslinging, behind-the-scenes brawls, and media-circus frenzy of the election in her sharp-witted feature SEE HOW THEY RUN, a comic expose of the often scandalous world of campaign politics. Features guest appearances by Bill Maher, Sean Penn, Arianna Huffington, Reverend Jesse Jackson, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, and many more.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Deleted Scenes Production Interviews Extended Theatrical TrailerInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Biography - 1. William Gibson: No Maps for These Territories (DVD)
Mark Neale directs this prolonged conversation with William Gibson (famed science-fiction novelist and creator of the term cyberspace) from the back of Gibson's limousine as they take a cross-country odyssey over nameless highways going no place in particular. The cameras roll as Gibson talks about his own personal philosophies, experiences, and opinions about the media-saturated culture in which we live. The conversation provides a compelling glimpse at the radical, genius writer whose 1984 novel NEUROMANCER forever changed the concept of the Internet, propelling the author to the forefront of the media explosion of the late 20th Century. Neale, a music video director, employs hyper speed editing and jarring visuals that combines various media images with excerpts of Gibson's novels, conveying a conceptual journey through the unchartered territory of William Gibson's mind. This slick and stylish visual trip also features interviews with writers Jack Womack and Bruce Sterling, readings from U2's Bono and The Edge, and music from Tomandandy.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Deleted Scenes Additional Footage - 1. Scared Straight! (DVD)
In 1972, documentary filmmaker Arnold Shapiro brought 17 juvenile delinquents to a maximum security prison in New Jersey to spend a day with some of the most dangerous and hardened criminals behind bars. These life-sentence inmates gave the wayward teens a shockingly realistic, no-holds-barred account of the brutality of daily prison life, powerfully documented by Shapiro in his Oscar and Emmy-award winning film SCARED STRAIGHT. This DVD revisits the important and influential documentary that altered the course of the participants' lives as well as those of millions of other troubled teens in high schools across the country. Also included is the updated feature SCARED STRAIGHT! 20 YEARS LATER, which examines the lasting effects of the program by following up on the teens and inmates two decades after the experience.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Bonus Feature - 1. Brother's Keeper (DVD)
This acclaimed documentary explores the odd world of the four elderly Ward brothers--disheveled, illiterate farmers who have lived their entire lives in a dilapidated two room shack. When William Ward dies in the bed that he shared with his brother Delbert, police officers become suspicious. Citing motives ranging from sex crime to euthanasia, they arrest Delbert for murder, penetrating the isolated, antiquated world that left the boys forgotten eccentrics for so many years. As the hazy case against Delbert is investigated and brought to trial, the previously distant population of their idyllic New York town, Munnsville, warmly embrace the remaining Ward brothers, rallying in small town solidarity against the seemingly corrupt urban authorities. Though the film's raison d'etre is the murder case, the Ward brothers' existence forms the riveting and intriguing crux of the film. Using their nearly unparalleled ability to gain the trust and affection of their subjects, Berlinger and Sinofsky open up a stunningly rich and complex world. This is anthropology at its most haunting; an in-depth look into an untouched slice of Americana that succeeds, as only the best documentary can, in capturing lives that are far too strange, beautiful, and elusive to be imagined.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
