The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo (DVD) The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo (DVD) $17.16 » The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo (DVD)

This enlightening biopic uses the life and work of Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico`s most legendary painters and an enduring feminist icon, to illuminate the Mexican Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s, as well as the political upheaval of the period. Intimately portraying the artist`s personal experiences of pain and suffering, from her early polio affliction to the bus accident that injured her for life, Frida`s strength and creativity ultimately prevail. She proceeded to develop an entirely innovative, self-expressive painting style, and became a leading figure in the burgeoning Communist movement. Her relationship with the artist Diego Rivera is shown to have been fraught with conflict, as each valued independence while remaining devoted to the other. Frida`s career blossomed, leading to international success and a brief affiliation with the Surrealists. She also had affairs with both women and men--including an exiled Leon Trotsky--before her health problems deteriorated beyond recovery. This moving depiction of a larger-than-life persona delves into history, with an eye for the personal, political, and cultural tides that shaped and defined Mexico during that era.

An extremely hardselling right-wing antithesis of Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 9/11, this pro-Bush version of history during George W.'s administration includes comments by Michael Ledeen of the conservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute; right-wing film critic Michael Medved; John Kerry's nemesis since the Nixon era John O'Neill; and Washington Times columnist Bill Sammon. Written by Ted Steinberg and HANOI HILTON director Lionel Chetwynd, the film explains that Celsius 41.11 is the temperature at which the brain begins to die and claims allegations that African-Americans were systematically disenfranchised in Florida during the 2000 election are unsubstantiated and that the election was not stolen.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: [unspecified] - English

The Weather Underground (DVD) The Weather Underground (DVD) $16.99 » The Weather Underground (DVD)

This intensely captivating documentary from directors Bill Siegel and Sam Green focuses on the radical political activist group the Weathermen, who organized in the 1960s to protest the Vietnam War. With roots in a group called Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Weathermen represented a small faction of political-minded protesters who believed that in order to avoid being marginalized and ignored by the U.S. government, they would need to take violent action. Speaking out with clear goals to intentionally inflict violence, their slogan was
Bring the War Home,
indicating that they would mimic on the U.S.`s home turf the violence that U.S. troops were ordered to carry out in Vietnam. They organized bombings--sometimes botching their plans horribly and causing unintended casualties--that put them on the Most Wanted list of the FBI. In turn, they split up and went underground, trying to avoid persecution while continuing to plan violent protests. While THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND takes a fascinating look at this group, its wildly daring tactics and philosophies, and its dedication to making a change; it also comments on the group`s failures and its irresponsible methods. Some of the most revelatory moments of the film come from other political activist groups, such as the Black Panthers, reflecting back on the actions of the Weathermen, and, in hindsight, looking at the group`s practices with new perspective.

March of the Penguins (WS/DVD) March of the Penguins (WS/DVD) $16.79 » March of the Penguins (WS/DVD)

Coming from a French director, Luc Jacquet, the miraculous MARCH OF THE PENGUINS would have to be a love story. And it is, in that it follows the mating rituals of the emperor penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer, after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding, the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking in single file, they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction, moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there, they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate--a monogamous match that will last a year, through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time, the mother will birth an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter, which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally, with spring, the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns, while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. The film is remarkable in its story, which is narrated by Morgan Freeman, whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is its photography, which shows the penguins hunting underwater, sliding on the ice, and in the midst of
kissing.
At one point the camera even zooms inside the mouth of a penguin as it regurgitates for its young. A story of love and more strikingly, survival, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS is any eye-opening and educational experience.

Gunner Palace (DVD) Gunner Palace (DVD) $16.71 » Gunner Palace (DVD)

In this striking documentary shot in 2003, early on in the US-led war on Iraq, a group of American soldiers in Baghdad who have taken over a bombed-out palace that belonged to Uday Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein, offer the camera a view on their world. While they party poolside for most of the day and lead raids on homes of suspected bomb-builders most nights, they also have a lot to say about the war and their situation. Rapping to each other or to the camera, they use rhyme to speak their minds about various aspects of the war, their day-to-day duties, and life in Iraq. Their youth and immaturity is striking, as is the war itself and the nebulous reasons that they are stationed there. While the primary purpose of GUNNER PALACE is to give the perspective of the soldiers, secondarily viewers get a glimpse of Iraqi civilians and how they react to the US military presence--some are terrified, others are skeptical, still others are compliant and grateful if not totally sure why. However, giving voice to the soldiers remains the film's major theme, and for this reason, filmmakers Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein appealed the original R-rating given to the film by the MPAA, and won. With a PG-13 rating, filmmakers explained, teenagers considering military careers can watch the film and benefit from seeing soldiers in combat and hearing them talk about what it's like.

Easy Riders Raging Bulls (DVD) Easy Riders Raging Bulls (DVD) $16.7 » Easy Riders Raging Bulls (DVD)

Inspired by comments from moviemaking luminaries such as Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader, former Premiere Magazine editor Peter Biskind set about chronicling the work of 1970s filmmakers in his 1999 book EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS. After the critical and commercial success of the exhaustive tome, it seemed only natural to transfer his fascinating tales to the screen, and the Trio channel duly obliged in 2003. With a Hollywood system offering unprecedented freedom to writers and directors, some highly individual and influential works from future main players such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg were produced. A golden era for American film had begun.Naturally there was a downside to the inexorable rise of such talented artists, and EASY RIDERS RAGING BULLS doesn't shirk from highlighting the scandals and tragedies that often beset the industry. Drug use, relationship problems, soaring egos and a growing sense of competition between the formerly tight-knit community saw the decade come to an unfortunate end. The sting in the tail came with the production of blockbuster movies such as JAWS, and demands from studios for more of the same. With dollar signs in their eyes, Hollywood producers closed ranks on the movie makers, restricted their talents, and ultimately made them unwitting victims of their own successes. Amongst those relaying stories on an incredibly creative period for the industry are Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper, Paul Schrader, Cybill Shepherd, Richard Dreyfuss, and many others. Narration comes from William H. Macy.
