Narrated by Yao`s 28-year-old interpreter, Colin Pine, the film shows how Yao and Colin navigate the turbulent ups and downs of American-style celebrity. Meanwhile, Colin also struggles with the complexity of translating NBA terminology into Mandarin Chinese. Despite frustrating setbacks and missteps, both Yao and Colin handle their new environments with aplomb and humor. Learning as they go, both become highly competent at what they do, finding ways to help each other. Directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman present this documentary portrait of the intellectual and philosopher Jacques Derrida. Beginning with his theory of deconstruction--the notion of getting to the basics behind our thought processes and the way in which we view the world--Derrida is portrayed naturally walking down the street or shuffling about his house. He frequently observes the camera, noting that its presence alone makes the situation unnatural, and not real. For instance, he says, on a normal day at home, he would stay in his pajamas and bathrobe rather than being (as we see him on film) dressed nicely and slightly primped. Derrida's interaction with the camera, the filmmakers, and others--his wife, his peers, his students--is in itself the embodiment of his theories. He talks about narcissism and being incapable of viewing himself--but rather being viewed by the other--while watching tapes of himself, or looking at his own portrait. He travels to South Africa and visits Nelson Mandela's old prison cell, then conducts a discussion with a group of students about forgiveness. Bits of his essays are read in intervals, as are brief biographies explaining his origins and experiences as a Jewish Algerian. Chronicling the political atmosphere of the 1960s by focusing on one of the largest student activist organizations of that time, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), REBELS WITH A CAUSE includes archival footage of protests and present-day interviews with former members. Helen Garvy, the director of REBELS WITH A CAUSE, was one of those members. Her interviews with Tom Hayden, Bernardine Dohrn, Todd Gitlin, and Carl Oglesby explain the group's growth into the Black Power movement and the women's movement as well as the group's beginning in 1960 with a few hundred members. The SDS issued the Port Huron Statement, a document that was circulated at campuses across the country and soon drew thousands of idealistic followers to its call for participatory democracy. Their members organized action projects along with SNCC
(Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) and CORE (Congress of Racial Equality). When the U.S. government entered into an undeclared war in Vietnam, the SDS organized, protested, and quickly grew to more than 100,000 members. I REMEMBER ME is an informative and moving documentary about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Filmmaker Kim Snyder chronicles her own painful struggle with the condition, profiles other sufferers, and researches overlooked past outbreaks of what came to be known as Yuppie Flu. Snyder interviews a wide range of medical professionals, who have wildly varying theories about the condition. With such confusion about what the condition actually is, and little evidence as to what causes it, Snyder shows how the medical establishment, particularly the CDC, has viewed the condition skeptically and investigated it halfheartedly, allowing people with CFS to become stigmatized as hypochondriacs. Through her interviews and profiles of sufferers--particularly one high school student who has been paralyzed by CFS--she shows just how debilitating and painful CFS can be. She also explores a little-known outbreak, which took place in Florida decades before the syndrome was recognized, and interviews survivors and doctors from those cases.
