The Fog of War (DVD)
Documentarian Errol Morris directs THE FOG OF WAR, a captivating look at Robert S. McNamara, who served as the Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The movie does not exclusively focus on this part of McNamara's career, however, and instead gives a broad overview of the man he was, his multitude of roles--a Harvard Business School graduate, a Colonel in the Air Force during WWII, president of Ford Motor Company--and his opinions on a variety of historical topics. Inspired by two books written by McNamara--IN RETROSPECT (1995) and WILSON'S GHOST (2001)--Morris gives McNamara a forum to talk about the decisions he made and the influence he had during his career. At the age of 85, McNamara has gained necessary perspective to do just that. Sharp as a tack, loaded with charisma, and generally fascinating, McNamara easily carries the film with his revealing interviews. Meanwhile, Morris's use of archival footage--along with maps and other effective visual aids--add context to McNamara's commentary, and Philip Glass's ominous, pulsing score gives the film's important subject matter the gravity it deserves.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailers 24 Additional Lessons From Robert McNamaraText/Photo Galleries: Robert McNamara's 10 Lessons In Text Form

First Descent (DVD)
It`s all about taking freestyle to the back roads in this breathtaking documentary that does for snowboarding what films like DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS (2001) did for skateboarding or THE ENDLESS SUMMER (1966) did for surfing. Documentary filmmakers Kemp Curly and Kevin Harrison capture a once-in-a-lifetime event: five major-league snowboard professionals meeting up to make their first descents down some staggeringly steep peaks in Alaska. They span three decades in their ages: there`s the pioneers, Shawn Farmer and Nick Peralta; esteemed Norwegian master Terje Haakonsen; and X-Games superstar Shaun White and top-flight girl snowboarder Hannah Teter. The latter two are each only 18 here and getting their first taste of the unexplored Alaska wilderness. Narrated by Henry Rollins, the film captures the easygoing camaraderie of these amazing athletes as they prepare to be lifted up in helicopters to the top of the world, outracing avalanches and plunging down straight-faced gorges. There`s lots of gorgeous Alaskan vistas, great party footage, and a heart-pumping soundtrack that includes songs by Beck, Queens of the Stone Age, Thunderball, Ursula 1000, Jets to Brazil, Rival Schools, and Minor Threat. There are also interview appearances from snowboard titans like Mike Basich, Tina Basich, Todd Richards, Tom Sims, and Andy Finch. Snowboarding junkies will be in 360-degree heaven with this documentary, and newcomers should relish the chance to catch up with the backstory of the amazing sport, including its origins, the wild and crazy early years, the initial hostility between boarders and skiers, the emergence of the half-pipe, and the triumphant arrival of the sport into the Olympics.

Born Into Brothels (DVD)
IN THEATRES: DECEMBER 8, 2004 (NY)British-born photojournalist Zana Briski overcame barriers of language, culture, and ethnicity when she immersed herself into an impoverished and illegal neighborhood in the Third World metropolis of Calcutta, India. An award-winning photographer, Briski befriended the children of Sonagachi (the city's red light district), starting a photography workshop for them and equipping them each with their own camera. The transformative power of this simple object is remarkable; within weeks, the children show new spirit and several have discovered a talent for the art. Briski and her co-director, Ross Kaufman, follow the children as they filter their marginalized, forgotten world through the camera lens. Over the course of the film, a central narrative unfolds--the children's quest, fueled by their newfound hope and strength, to leave the brothels for a better life. The directors frame the children in extreme close-ups, caressing their features and capturing each subtle change of expression. By intercutting their own images with those taken by the children, the directors establish the distinct personality and voice of their subjects. Among them are Avijit, a rotund, serious 11-year-old of immense talent, whose mother is murdered by her pimp during the filming; Kochi, a quiet slip of a girl, destined to follow the family line of prostitution; and Puja, a feisty tomboy whose tenacity allows her to photograph the district's most dangerous areas. Though the beauty of the story is marred by tragedy and heartbreak, this fine documentary is ultimately a testament to the immense power of art, even in the bleakest of environments.

Winged Migration (DVD)
Jacques Perrin (MICROCOSMOS) presents this dramatically beautiful documentary about bird migratory patterns, featuring breathtaking photography and hypnotic music. The film covers seven continents during four seasons, highlighting species both unique and common. From puffins in Iceland, whooper swans in Japan, bald eagles in Arizona, flamingos in Kenya, albatross in New Zealand, macaw in Peru, geese in Nepal, and plenty of cranes and storks in the director's native France, WINGED MIGRATION is literally a tour of the world from a bird's eye view. Filmed over the course of three year's time, the production for the movie was extensive to say the least. Using a crew of over 450 people broken up into five teams, new photographic techniques were invented specifically for the purpose of filming flocks of birds in flight. Balloon, helicopter, helicopter model, remote controlled glider, traditional glider, delta plane, and ultra-light motorized aircraft are the flying devices used to achieve the film's incredible camera angles. In fact, because birds were trained to be unafraid of the delta plane, photographers were able to fly alongside flocks, sometimes filming birds as they gazed into the camera's lens while also keeping in focus the dramatic landscape unfolding below. WINGED MIGRATION takes viewers on a unique journey soaring over the Earth as few films have ever done before.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Bukowski: Born Into This (DVD)
Director John Dullaghan spent seven years searching high and low for the most pertinent material he could find about the notorious writer, drinker, and recluse Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). The result is BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS, a highly entertaining, informative tribute to Bukowski`s work, his life, and the people who were inspired and influenced by him. Using a large quantity of grainy black-and-white interview footage shot by German Cosmopolitan in the 1970s, some of the most frank conversations and classic moments in the film--Bukowski driving his car through L.A. with a big crack in the windshield, telling stories--come from this archival material. Other interviews come from Bukowski`s wife and a smattering of girlfriends ranging from
Cupcakes
to Linda King, from a former post office coworker, and from celebrities and friends like Taylor Hackford, Bono, Sean Penn, Harry Dean Stanton, and Tom Waits. Barbet Schroeder also appears in the film to talk about his feature film BARFLY, based on Bukowski, which starred Mickey Rourke. With readings of Bukowski`s poems peppered throughout, the documentary traces the progress of his life from his miserable childhood to his 14-year tenure as a postal worker, his column
Notes of a Dirty Old Man
in the L.A. Free Press, his foul mouth and dark outlook, his misogynistic view of women, his books, and of course, his steady heavy drinking. And yet, the film is uplifting and shows Bukowski`s soft, ironic side. BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS succeeds with flying colors, adding new insight to this fascinating and hard-to-know character whose memory will not soon be forgotten.

Story of the Weeping Camel
Description:
Effortlessly blending drama, nature documentary, and ethnographic film, THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL weaves a magical tale about a nomadic Mongolian family who reunite a rejected baby camel with its mother. When a mother camel refuses to sustain her child, the keepers of the camels often reunite them in a ritual with folk music and chanting, the results of which elicit deep emotion--even causing the mother camel to weep real tears. Exploring more than just traditional ritual, this film speaks to the very nature of love--the baby camel cannot survive without his mother, just as no animal or person can.
Directors Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni drew upon the documentary style of Robert Flaherty (NANOOK OF THE NORTH), who recreated events to comprehensively portray his subjects. The pair tirelessly filmed spontaneous events for much of the mother-baby story, but chose to recreate certain moments in the family's daily life. A particularly humorous and insightful example involves a young boy who clearly feels conflicted between his family life and his desire for a more Western life. The film creates a contrast between the two, showing the boy listening to traditional fables in his family's tent, but then dreaming about owning a television. This spare film provides a visually enchanting and unique learning experience.

The Corporation (DVD)
THE CORPORATION is a well-organized and deeply fascinating documentary about the growing prominence of large global businesses, and the way that their decisions are impacting the world. The film shows how corporations have ballooned in size and power since the industrial revolution, and explains the laws and loopholes that allow them to remain nearly unaccountable for their actions. If they break a law, they are willing to admit guilt and pay the fine, because the profits outweigh the penalties. Therefore, they continue to cause serious environmental problems by dumping waste into rivers and oceans and by depleting natural resources, resulting in irreversible damage to the earth which also poses a serious threat to human life. Beyond environmental issues, the film shows how corporations exploit underpaid laborers in third world countries, violate basic human rights, make deals with foreign countries who are known enemies of the US, and in some instances perpetuate fascist regimes. Valuable, informative talking-head commentary comes from a diverse group including Ray Anderson, CEO of carpet manufacturer Interface; Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former chairman of Royal Dutch Shell; Dr. Vandana Shiva, feminist and ecologist; Milton Friedman, Nobel prize-winning economist; Marc Barry, corporate spy; Joe Badaracco, professor of business ethics at Harvard; and activists Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Michael Moore. Providing useful references to major news stories that illustrate various corporate developments, and good information about how the system works, THE CORPORATION empowers viewers and shows them that they can realistically enact change. For that reason, this documentary makes real progress, encouraging viewers to take the world's future into their own hands and away from corporations whose sole interest is profit.
