This collection is comprised of the early silent films by the heavier half of the famous comedy duo, all made prior to Laurel and Hardy`s official partnership. Shot while the comic was making a name for himself at numerous studios from New York to Jacksonville, the selection also includes some of Hardy`s films from his early Hal Roach days, including 45 MINUTES FROM HOLLYWOOD, the duo`s first collaboration under Roach. Larry Semon, to whose dimwitted employee Hardy often played the overbearing boss, co-stars in THE SHOW and THE SAWMILL. HOP TO IT! co-stars Bobby Ray, with whom Hardy enacts a bellhop routine that could be the apotheosis of slapstick. All of the films demonstrate the genesis of a true comic genius who went on to set a standard for comedy that endures to this day.

This double feature from writer/director/producer James L. Brooks includes SPANGLISH and AS GOOD AS IT GETS. The former centers on celebrated chef John Clasky (Adam Sandler), who is the patriarch of his household, while it is his wife`s volatile mood swings that really run the show. When the Claskys hire the beautiful Flor (Paz Vega) to be their maid, their already rocky relationship faces some even bigger boulders. Spanish-speaking Flor is a sincere, loving single mother whose daughter, Christina (Shelbie Bruce), receives lavish displays of affection from Deborah. Meanwhile, Deborah neglects her own son and daughter in much the same way that her self-absorbed, alcoholic mother, Evelyn (Cloris Leachman), neglected her. Eventually Deborah crosses a line when she betrays her husband with the real estate broker who is helping her search for a beach house. Faced with this challenge, John and Flor, who share a clear attraction to one another, get the chance to explore their feelings. AS GOOD AS IT GETS follows the acerbic and outwardly despicable pulp novelist Melvin Udall, who lives in a haze of obsessive-compulsive behavior patterns. Suspension of disbelief is a necessity--albeit a
pleasurable one--regarding many aspects of this romantic comedy, not the least of which being that either of its good-looking leads would ever lead lonely existences. Reese Witherspoon plays ambitious medical intern Elizabeth, who regularly clocks in 20 hour days at the hospital. Her work is her life, much to the chagrin of her sister Abby, who is married, with kids, and constantly attempting to get Elizabeth to go out more. When Abby finally succeeds in setting up a blind date for her sister, Elizabeth has an accident en route while driving to meet the mystery man, and the stage is set for love.David (Mark Ruffalo) has been apathetically searching for a new apartment in the cutthroat San Francisco housing market, while attempting to overcome his wife s death two years ago. When he finally finds the perfect place, nothing is going to make him leave, and this includes the blonde control freak (Elizabeth) who suddenly shows up while he s busy vegetating. She claims the apartment is hers, and it becomes ever clearer that Elizabeth doesn t remember her past, and shows irrefutable signs of being a ghost. David signs on to help her solve her own mystery, and the the two grow closer even as it becomes ever clearer that they ll never be able to be together. The chemistry between Witherspoon and Ruffalo breathes life into the well-trod terrain of the ghost love story, while NAPOLEON DYNAMITE S Jon Heder almost steals the show as a bookstore worker with
the Gift.
The slapstick humor resulting from David s conversations with his
invisible
companion is hilarious--in one standout scene, David saves a man s life as Elizabeth talks him through the task. The ultimate message about the power of love and wisely-used time gives added resonance to the tale.

Brady Davis (Adam Hicks) is a Boy Scout in a small town, looking forward to the upcoming Pinewood Derby in which he will compete. Unfortunately, his dad (Greg Germann, JESUS`S SON) takes the competition as an opportunity to defeat his childhood rival and fellow dad, Ace Montana (Marc Raymond). Brady`s father and a host of other neighborhood dads resort to ever nastier tricks to ensure their victory, acting like children while the kids--and Brady`s incredulous mom (Lauren Holly, DUMB & DUMBER)--can do nothing but look on. Writers block seems to strike even the most prolific writers at some point in their lives, and forms the backbone of the story for SAM THE MAN. Sam Manning (Fisher Stevens) is the writer in question, whose creative process has ground to an unwelcome halt during the writing of his second novel. A womanizer who works various interminable jobs in order to pay the rent, Sam's private life starts to consume his every waking hour, leading the writers block to become one of the easier problems he has to grapple with.
