Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris) has been a runaway, prostitute, drug addict, and general misfit all her life. But upon her release from prison, the 46-year-old decides it's time to clean up her life, move back in with her family, and earn a high school diploma. Music-video director Marcos Siega infuses this entertainingly dark social satire with stylish camerawork and clever editing. While visually rooted in the bubble gum teen comedy aesthetic, PRETTY PERSUASION boldly insists on taking brutal stabs at topics as sensitive as the war in Iraq, religion, and race. With a deceptively sweet appearance and a genius IQ, 15-year-old aspiring actress Kimberly Joyce (Evan Rachel Wood) has the world in the palm of her perfectly manicured hand. When she takes new Arab student Randa (Adi Schnall) under her shallow wings, it is with the ulterior motives she has learned from her crazy, porn-watching, coke-snorting racist father (James Woods), his blank trophy wife (Jaime King), and perverted teachers like Mr. Anderson (Ron Livingston). Desperately wanting the publicity, Kimberly convinces her sidekicks Randa and Brittany (Elisabeth Harnois) to make false allegations of sexual abuse against Mr. Anderson. While Anderson is may not be a good teacher or role model, he is not guilty of actual sexual assault. When Anderson buys his wife (Selma Blair) a skirt identical to the uniform worn by his students, his inappropriate feelings are revealed. The film suggests that society can expect no less than Kimberly`s self-described precociousness from a generation that values good looks, fame, and money over honesty, goodness, and moral integrity. Wood shines as Kimberly, a villain who is truly the victim of the world around her. While Kimberly is hellbent on getting what she wants, it is hard to see how someone who has so internalized society`s warped ideology can even have a sense of self.

When ambitious young attorney Dave (Jay Harrington, COUPLING, SUMMERLAND) sets his sights on being made partner in his firm, he`s not going to let anything get in the way. He finds himself in contention for the position with his equally ambitious co-worker Katherine (Julie Bowen, BOSTON LEGAL), also a former lover of his. Realizing that both are qualified for the position, Dave decides that Katherine has a leg up on him since she`s a woman, and takes advantage of the office rumors about his homosexuality. Thus he assumes a double life, and with his friend Ed (Ian Michael Black, ED) posing as his partner, everyone in Dave`s professional life believes that he`s gay--except of course Katherine. Meanwhile, gorgeous Lucy (Brooke Langton, SWINGERS) moves in down the hall, and Dave attempts to act on his attraction to her, until, inevitably, his worlds collide.

Given George Stevens' penchant for romantic comedy, it's probably not surprising that the WWII housing crunch in Washington, D.C. could provide fertile grounds for his imagination. The city's dearth of apartments has made things difficult even for 60-year-old millionaire Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn) who answers an ad for an apartment share only to find a long line of prospective tenants ahead of him. Claiming to be the apartment's tenant, he dismisses the others, before encountering Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur), the real leaseholder. Despite her initial reluctance to rent to a man, she gives him a trial week. While she's out the next day, Sgt. Joe Carter (Joel McCrea) arrives to inquire about the ad, and the enterprising Coburn offers him half of his room, which he accepts. Connie is angry after finding out about the second sublet and orders them both to leave, but realizes she has to let them stay, since she can't return their money, which she's already spent. Performance artist Miranda July`s debut feature film, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, is a charming, quirky romantic comedy that is entertaining from start to finish. Writer-director July stars as Christine, an offbeat performance artist who becomes instantly smitten with Richard (John Hawkes), a brooding department-store shoe salesman who is having trouble dealing with his divorce and his separation from his two kids--the shy, private Peter (Miles Thompson) and the very funny Robby (Brandon Ratcliff). Christine is trying to get her latest work accepted at a major museum, but first she has to get through mean-spirited Nancy (Tracy Wright), who is not necessarily very interested in her submission. Meanwhile, Natasha Slayton and Najarra Townsend are a riot as a pair of teenagers who think they`re ready for sex as they tease neighborhood pervert Andrew (Brad Henke) and consider experimenting with Peter. Amid all the tender, comedic, well-acted, and well-written scenes, Ratcliff nearly steals the film as Robby gets involved in a dirty, hysterical online chat with a mystery person. July`s marvelous, surprising movie won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival in addition to well-deserved prizes at the Philadelphia and San Francisco International Film Festivals.
