The Householder (DVD)
James Ivory directed this lighthearted comedy set in 1960s India about an arranged marriage between two young people who are too inexperienced and immature to adjust to one another. Young college professor Prem (Shashi Kapoor) and beautiful Indu (Leela Naidu) seem ill-suited as husband and wife in their arranged marriage. While Prem begrudgingly accepts his role as the breadwinner, he tries to turn Indu into what he considers a more traditional wife. After Indu becomes pregnant and Prem turns to his mother for advice, the couple seems destined for trouble. THE HOUSEHOLDER was the first theatrical feature film for Merchant Ivory Productions, the company formed by Ivory and his producing partner, Ismail Merchant. THE HOUSEHOLDER was also the first time the two collaborated with writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, on whose novel the film was based. A recurring theme in Ivory's movies--of characters struggling to adjust to a changing world--can be spotted in this early project.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull-Screen - 1.33Audio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Documentaries - 1.The Sword and the Flute (1959 - Director James Ivory's Second Documentary Short Film) Short Films - 1.The Creation of Woman (1960 - Producer Ismail Merchant's First Short Film) Featurettes - 1.Conversation With the Filmmakers

Hullabaloo over Georgie and Bonnie's Pictures (DVD)
Merchant Ivory Productions collaborated with London Weekend Television in 1978 to create the film HULLABALOO OVER GEORGIE AND BONNIE'S PICTURES. In India, a young maharaja, Georgie (Victor Banerjee), and his sister, Bonnie (Aparna Sen), possess a collection of Indian miniature paintings rotting away in a storeroom of their palace. Dame Peggy Ashcroft stars as Lady Gee, a manipulative London art dealer who journeys to India in search of their set of priceless art. Competing with Lady Gee is another art collector, Clark Haven (Larry Pine). The two collectors try through manipulation, flirtation, and trickery to scam the artwork out of the maharaja's hands while the collection's curator (Saeed Jaffrey) works both sides against each other. BBC producer Melvyn Bragg approached Merchant Ivory Productions with the offer of making a film for London Weekend Television's THE SOUTH BANK SHOW, and, after its success on broadcast television, the movie was released as a feature film. The premise behind HULLABALOO was inspired by director James Ivory's 1959 documentary, THE SWORD AND THE FLUTE (narrated by Jaffrey), which detailed the history and technique of Indian miniature painting.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Interviews - 1. The Personals (DVD)
The Taiwanese romantic comedy THE PERSONALS follows the often hilarious, sometimes sad meetings that a pretty young woman has with the men who respond to the ad that she placed in the personals section of the newspaper. Du Jiazhen (Rene Liu), the woman, is a young eye doctor on a mission to find a husband. After spontaneously putting an ad in the paper, she begins to meet with interested men regularly, and what began as an impromptu action quickly changes into an obsession. Returning day after day to the same teahouse, she is a quiet, thoughtful observer, letting the men tell all before her. These interactions are broken up by Du's nightly calls to the answering machine of her ex-lover, during which she communicates her complex feelings and doubts. She continues to meet man after man until finally, a shocking discovery changes everything.Director Chen Kuo-fu, a noted film critic in Taiwan, adds intelligence and depth to a story that could have been shallow and conventional. Creating a lush sense of setting and mood, he manages to give a voice to an entire culture through the emotional journey of one woman. It is Rene Liu's remarkably layered performance as the quietly tortured yet simultaneously strong protagonist that resonates long after the film is over.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.85:1Audio: Stereo - Chinese Subtitles - English - OptionalInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Biographies - 1. Bright Young Things (DVD)
Based on VILE BODIES, the novel by Evelyn Waugh, this colorful trifle is set in 1920s London at the height of its raucous swing era, when society balls and bacchanalian behavior were all the rage. Adam (Stephen Campbell Moore) is a young, carefree writer whose circle of eccentric friends keep him out at parties all night long. Wild costumes, dancing, cocktails, cocaine, and positively divine company make a life of neverending revelry totally attainable. While Adam never seems to have a dime in his pocket, he does not seem to care. The only thing he risks is the opportunity to marry his glamorous sweetheart Nina (Emily Mortimer) whose father insists she wed for financial gain. In an effort to appease Nina and her father, Adam gleans a few dollars from his job as a gossip columnist, until his intimidating boss (Dan Aykroyd) fires him for inventing fashion trends. But every dollar makes is lost within no time at all on whimsical materialistic purchases and risky endeavors such as betting on horses. Finally the war starts, bringing the decadence to a disturbing halt and forcing Adam to finally sober up. A quaint period piece full of jumping Charleston music and stylish suits and gowns, Stephen Fry's BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS is light and easily digestible entertainment.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseKeep CaseWidescreen 1.85Audio: Dolby Surround 5.1 EnglishAdditional Release Material: Documentary Audio Commentary

Rebound (DVD)
In the tradition of THE BAD NEWS BEARS comes another family sports comedy, REBOUND. Martin Lawrence stars as superstar college basketball coach Roy McCormick, who is clearly more interested in his social status than he is in the game that made him famous. Unfortunately, when he accidentally kills the pet bird of the opposing team`s mascot, he`s suspended. The only way to make a return to the big time is if he is able to prove that he has his temper in check. Enter the bumbling players of McCormick`s alma mater, Mt. Vernon Jr. High School, who goad McCormick into being their coach. The only trouble is that the last thing McCormick wants to do is coach a bunch of uncoordinated losers. Gradually, however, Coach McCormick begins to see the world differently when his players show signs of actual promise. And as he finds himself falling for the mother (Wendy Raquel Robinson) of his star player, Keith (Oren Williams), the life that he left behind doesn`t seem so appealing anymore. Directed with flair by Steve Carr (DR. DOLITTLE 2, DADDY DAY CARE), REBOUND features an impressively toned-down Lawrence, as well as a slew of hilarious supporting turns (including Megan Mullally and Patrick Warburton).

The Man (DVD)
Mismatching the two principal characters in a movie has become a comedy staple in Hollywood, and the tradition continues in director Les Mayfield`s THE MAN. Andy Fidler (Eugene Levy) has a cheery outlook on life. Even a less than exciting job selling dental products can`t wipe the smile from his face. But when he winds up in Detroit for a dental convention and is wrongly identified as an arms dealer, his smile is in danger of disappearing for good. Tough-as-nails cop Derrick Vann (Samuel L. Jackson) has set up an operation to catch the gang who run with the villain Fidler has been mistaken for. Eager to find him after the group of gun runners put a permanent end to his partner`s career, Vann concocts a screwball scheme in which Fidler will impersonate the crook he resembles, while also trying to shake the Internal Affairs agents who are closely trailing him. Sam Jackson steals THE MAN from under Levy`s nose, with some impressive, snappy dialogue reminiscent of his role as Jules Winnfield in PULP FICTION. Driven to the brink of insanity by the inane banter spewing from Levy`s mouth, and a flatulence problem at the other end, Jackson fits into the role like a true pro. The film benefits from an elementary plot that simply allows the laughs to come thick and fast, and evolves only to allow Jackson to display further exasperation at his oblivious partner`s behavior. A cut above the gross-out comedies it will undoubtedly be compared to, THE MAN is a deliciously silly film that benefits from some strong performances.
