The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vol 1 (DVD)
Some of the the early silent movies of Harold Lloyd, one of the first comedians to work in film, are collected on this release. Lloyd`s film career began in 1913 with a number of small, uncredited parts in some of the earliest movies to be committed to celluloid. But it didn`t take long for him to blossom into a star in his own right, and this collection begins with two short films from 1919--ASK FATHER and FROM HAND TO MOUTH. In both these films, and the subsequent AN EASTERN WESTERNER (1920), Lloyd is cast as
The Boy,
a nameless comic figure who tries to woo a character known simply as
The Girl
(usually played by faithful Lloyd sidekick Mildred Davis). SAFETY LAST! (1923) sees Lloyd and Davis reprising their roles once again, and is notable for one of the most iconic and enduring images of the late actor as he straddles the hands of a clock on a perilously high building in New York City. Rounding out this collection, GIRL SHY (1924) sees Lloyd really hitting his stride. Playing a loser in love who tries to prevent the object of his desire from getting married, the film is packed full of inventive dream sequences, tremendous slapstick, and a hair-raising car chase. The first in a two-part collection of films from Lloyd, this is a wonderful way to experience the work of one of the true greats of the silent era.
