After the Sunset
Brett Ratner (RUSH HOUR) directed this lighthearted caper starring Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek as lovebird jewel thieves. After snatching a huge diamond out from under the nose of FBI agent Stan (Woody Harrelson), the pair retire to the Bahamas to live happily ever after. Yet after a few months, Max (Brosnan) gets bored and starts longing to get back in the game. His chance comes when a cruise ship carrying a large, lovely diamond pulls into port. Lola (Hayek) gets pretty mad when she finds out her man wants to risk it all once again, especially since Stan is in town, determined to redeem his sullied reputation by catching Max in the act. Don Cheadle is the local crime boss who partners with Jack for the heist, or maybe that's a fake-out move to put the feds off the scent. It hardly matters in the long run, as Max and Stan become fast friends, and no diamond can match the beauty of the film's tropical island locale, or its gorgeous lead actress in various swimwear. One gets the sense the cast really had a good time shooting this, and their good vibrations will undoubtedly rub off on the vacation-deprived viewer. Naomie Harris (28 DAYS LATER) plays a major hottie as a local cop who falls for Stan and agrees to help him take the other couple down. The legendary Lalo Schifrin (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE) conducted the pulse-quickening score.

Man on Fire/Die Hard (DVD)
MAN ON FIRE: John Creasy (Denzel Washington) is a lost soul. A former government operative, he has become an alcoholic nomad, endlessly searching for inspiration and redemption. An old friend (Christopher Walken) who lives in Mexico gets Creasy a job as a bodyguard for nine-year-old Lupita
Pita
Ramos (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of Mexican Samuel (Marc Anthony) and his American wife Lisa (Radha Mitchell). Creasy`s primary job is to protect Pita from the kidnapping attempts that are an increasing menace to the children of Mexico City`s wealthy. A man of few words and many secrets, Creasy initially balks at Pita`s attempts to befriend him, but soon a bond grows between the precocious child and the lonely man who is tormented by his past. When Pita is kidnapped despite Creasy`s valiant attempts to save her, he will do anything to bring all of those involved to justice.
In the process, his fury unravels a net of almost unimaginable corruption and greed. Director Tony Scott (TOP GUN, CRIMSON TIDE) builds the relationship between Creasy and Pita in the first half of the film in order to justify Creasy`s violent actions in the latter half, and does a fine job of keeping the film`s tension consistently high.DIE HARD: One of the greatest action movies of the late eighties, DIE HARD, ushered in a new standard for the genre. With the dissolution of the Cold War, both the stereotypical Russian threat (TOP GUN, RED DAWN) and the destructive egoist (OCTOPUSSY) became less fearful. With DIE HARD, director John McTiernan introduced Hollywood to a new type of villain: the terrorist entrepreneur. Alan Rickman stars as Hans Gruber, a relentless businessman whose lethal tactics achieve his goals. Unlike most 1980s film villains who committed globally dangerous acts for liberty, genocide, or megalomania, DIE HARD`s Gruber uses guns, explosives and cunning to storm the Takagi Corporation`s Christmas party and heist millions of dollars from the company. In addition, DIE HARD

Fight Club/Kiss of the Dragon (DVD)
FIGHT CLUB: FIGHT CLUB is narrated by a lonely, unfulfilled young man (Edward Norton) who finds his only comfort in feigning terminal illness and attending disease support groups. Hopping from group to group, he encounters another pretender, or
tourist,
the morose Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), who immediately gets under his skin. However, while returning from a business trip, he meets a more intriguing character--the subversive Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). They become fast friends, bonding over a mutual disgust for corporate consumer-culture hypocrisy. Eventually, the two start Fight Club, which convenes in a bar basement where angry men get to vent their frustrations in brutal, bare-knuckle bouts. Fight Club soon becomes the men`s only real priority, and when the club starts a cross-country expansion, things start getting really crazy. Like Tyler Durden himself, director David Fincher s FIGHT CLUB, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is startlingly aggressive and gleefully mischievous as it skewers the superficiality of American pop culture. Outstanding performances by Norton and Pitt are supported by a razor-sharp script and an arsenal of stunning visual effects that include computer animation and sleight-of-hand editing. One of the most unique films of the late 20th century, FIGHT CLUB is a pitch-black comedy of striking intensity.KISS OF THE DRAGON: The writers of THE FIFTH ELEMENT, Luc Besson (who also directed the Bruce Willis film) and Robert Mark Kamen, have teamed up again to deliver Jet Li in the action thriller KISS OF THE DRAGON. Li stars as Liu Jiuan, a Chinese agent so dedicated to his job that he has no friends, no family, no dreams. He is sent to Paris to help the French police capture a Chinese gangster, but France`s top cop, Jean-Pierre Richard (Tcheky Karyo), has set Liu up to take the fall for a brutal killing he himself carried out. On the run in a strange city, Liu keeps a low profile until he unwillingly becomes frien

Day After Tomorrow/Flight of the Phoenix (DVD)
THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW: Director Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA) trades in evil aliens and radioactive lizards for some seriously bad weather. When a radical change in the temperature of the world`s oceans causes deadly storms and sets a new Ice Age in motion, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) must race from Washington, D.C., to save his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), in the subzero climate of New York City. Elsewhere, tornadoes and hail menace the globe, leading to international disasters on an extraordinary level.Emmerich, who has proven on numerous occasions to be a master of big-budget cinematic destruction, aims to outdo himself with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Here, entire cities are ripped apart, flooded, and/or frozen, adding up to one of the biggest disaster movies ever filmed. Although astonishingly rendered special effects rule the movie, adept actors such as Quaid and Gyllenhaal (along with Sela Ward, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, and others) turn in solid performances that help to balance out the meteorological mayhem. Surprisingly, Emmerich also uses the film as a vehicle for clever moments of social and political commentary, making THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW admirably smarter and considerably more entertaining than typical Hollywood blockbusters.FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX: Originally a 1965 Jimmy Stewart vehicle, this FLIGHT gets a rough-and-ready updating for the new century, with the stalwart Dennis Quaid now inhabiting the title role. He`s a pilot on a routine trip out to investigate some remote oil rigs in the Gobi Desert, when things go wrong and he makes a crash landing in the middle of nowhere. For him and the men with him, a slow, tortured, thirsty death seems certain, unless the plucky mechanic in the crew (Giovanni Ribisi) can design a whole new plane from the wreckage. As with the original, this is a manly adventure about rugged survival and mechanical ingenuity--but this time there`s also a woman on board--Kelly (Miranda Otto),

He`s a pilot on a routine trip out to investigate some remote oil rigs in the Gobi Desert, but things go wrong and he makes a crash landing in the middle of nowhere. For him, and the men along for the ride, a slow, tortured, thirsty death seems certain, unless the plucky mechanic in the crew (Giovanni Ribisi) can design a whole new plane from the wreckage. As with the original, this is a manly adventure of rugged survival and mechanical ingenuity, only this time there`s a woman on board, Kelly (Miranda Otto), who generates some romantic sparks. Some of the other survivors are played by Tyrese Gibson, Sticky Fingaz, Bob Brown, and Kirk Jones. The men and one woman have to tangle with murderous desert raiders and numerous sandstorms in addition to the frequent squabbling amongst themselves. Director John Moore gets a lot of mileage out of the desert backdrop and Ribisi is solid as the mechanic with a troubled past. The film was produced by William Aldrich, whose father, Robert, directed the Stewart original. Edward Burns (THE BROTHERS McMULLEN) co-wrote the new screenplay.BEHIND ENEMY LINES: On a reconnaissance flight over eastern Europe, disillusioned naval pilot Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) and his partner, Stackhouse (Gabriel Macht), photograph a scene they were not meant to see. When their plane is shot down and Stackhouse is quickly captured and executed, Burnett must struggle to survive in unfamiliar hostile territory with a cold-blooded assassin and hundreds of enemy troops on his heels. Meanwhile, on an American battleship in the Adriatic Sea, Burnett`s commanding officer, Admiral Reigart (Gene Hackman), attempts to negotiate his return amidst tense political and military maneuvers. Soon Burnett discovers exactly why he`s being hunted, making his situation--and Rei
