BAD BOYS: Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) is a happily married family man. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) is a smooth-talking bachelor. This explosion-heavy, chase-filled, gun-smoking action comedy is directed by Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, PEARL HARBOR) and features comedic odd-couple-style bantering between the aptly paired Smith and Lawrence.S.W.A.T. Inspired by the 1970s show of the same name, S.W.A.T. is set in modern day Los Angeles. Recently demoted officer Jim Street (Colin Farrell) gets a chance to redeem himself when aging veteran Hondo (Samuel L. Jackson) is put in control of a new team. Joining Jim are Deke Kay (LL Cool J), Michael Boxer (Brian Van Holt), T.J. McCabe (Josh Charles), and Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez), all outcasts in their own right. But after an intense training period, the team is ready to hit the streets. Their first big assignment involves one of the world's most dangerous criminals, Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez), who makes an on-camera declaration that he'll give $100 million to whoever breaks him out of jail. Pretty soon, everyone's trying to get a piece of the action, including Jim's former partner, Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner), who uses his own S.W.A.T. team experience to plot the escape of a lifetime. It's up to Hondo and Jim to outsmart the bad guys and make sure that Alex is safely transported to a federal penitentiary. S.W.A.T. is an entertaining adventure made all the more engaging because of the way director Clark Johnson concerns himself equally with the quality of the film's drama and its action.

Godzilla (Tsutomo Kitagawa) is back and this time he's trying to smash and destroy all of Japan's nuclear reactors and power plants. In this 23rd film in the cult series of monster movies that began in 1954, GODZILLA 2000 beckons the giant, indestructible lizard from his hiding place deep in the ocean. A local scientist (Takehiro Murata) who tries to decode the giant lizard's motives and predict where his next terrifying steps will land concludes that there must be a reason why Godzilla has emerged from the sea. However, when a 6,000-year-old meteor surfaces from the bottom of the ocean and turns into a spaceship, Godzilla--along with the entire population of Japan--is overwhelmed by chaos, crisis, and hysteria.Yuki (Naomi Nishidi), a local journalist trying to get a close-up shot of Godzilla, along with Shinoda (Takehiro Murata) and his kid daughter (Mayu Sizuki), form a guerilla research group called the GPN (Godzilla Prediction Network). They are the good guys, making the CCI (Crisis Control Intelligence), headed up by a hilariously nihilistic Katagiri (Hiroshi Abe), the bad guys. Takao Okawara's GODZILLA 2000 is perfectly consistent with its predecessors: the monsters are nasty and ferocious and they wipe out every skyscraper in Tokyo, literally leveling the city. The film brings back all the old tricks, with special effects akin to the Godzilla films of yore and plenty of monster mania.

This Argentinean tale, which revolves around a group of families passing summer vacation in a rural country house, does not rely on a concrete plotline, but rather roves, rambles, and stumbles upon each new event. The most notable characteristic of LA CIENAGA is its mood--a brooding, dreadful, fearsome tension that does not wain or cease even in the very last moment of the film. No event, no action, no exchange of words, no scene of the movie is more or less important than another. Instead, the film continues nonsequentially in what feels like a prolonged wait.Using gorgeous, realistic photography--of green mountains against a grayish humid sky, of the bright colors of summer swimsuits and shorts stained with blood or mud, of the simultaneously beautiful and disgusting human body--Lucrecia Martel's oeuvre is about strings of images and the suggestion of potential meanings. Never, however, does the director step over the line and reveal too much to her viewers.
