English filmmaker Constantine Giannaris, one of Britain's premier directors dealing with gay subject matter, sublimated his normal thematic preoccupations with the crime drama 3 STEPS TO HEAVEN. After a wild party, the body of one of the guests, Sean, is discovered by the riverside. Although the police rule the death an accident, Sean's girlfriend isn't so sure. She launches into her own private investigation, taking up multiple roles and disguises, discovering that three minor celebrities were the last to see Sean alive. The course of her search leads her from the upper echelons of London society to its underbelly. Perhaps the best film made in this genre, EXCALIBUR benefits from an extraordinary cast, including appearances by Byrne, Patrick Stewart, and Liam Neeson early in their celluloid careers. Lottery fever strikes a poor neighborhood in this low-budget film set in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Hank Stokes is a Black high school senior who dreams of becoming a pro basketball player. Although graduation is near, his future remains uncertain. But for the moment there's the senior prom and first love to savor.
Joy, the pretty Latina girl who lives next door, is the object of his affections. The two strike up a romance. But she is preparing to go away to college and their relationship could be short-lived.
In hopes of bettering his prospects, Hank buys a lottery ticket that could be worth $27 million -- money that would allow him and Joy to leave their bleak neighborhood behind together.
But the youngsters aren't the only ones in love, because Hank's dad and Joy's aunt, Flo, have fallen for each other as well.
Then Flo learns that she sold the winning lottery ticket at her liquor store... only the lucky person doesn't step forward to claim the cash. Everybody in the neighborhood tries to figure out who could have hit the jackpot.
In the process, they all come to realize that they might not need the $27 million to find happiness...
