Mary becomes enmeshed in the lives not only of her own family, but of her best friend Rose Lee Holloway, with whom she often sits on the stoop of their building and discusses the matters of the day. Frequently, these include the activities of the feisty upstairs neighbor, Sandra, played by Jackee, and the lovable but gossipy next door neighbor, Pearl.
