Thirty years before the tragic events of 9/11, another September bore witness to a spectacular airline hijacking that changed the course of history. On September 6, 1970, a radical militant group simultaneously hijacked four European passenger jets in an act of solidarity with the Palestinian cause. While no one died in the incident, the event not only ushered in the rash of 1970s-era hijackings but set the stage for the use of terrorism as a political tool.
